#29 Try a new fitness activity, pt. 2

February 29, 2012 By: project30in20122 Comments

On Tuesday morning, I woke up at 6am with a smile on my face. After a deep stretch to greet the day, I bounded out of bed and to the bathroom, whistling to myself as I got ready for the gym. I walked the dog, who seemed so happy to see the morning sun, and then picked up my gym bag that I had smartly chosen to pack the night before. HA! Did you believe any of that? I hope not, because it is highly inaccurate. In the real world, my alarm went off at 6am, I hit snooze until the last possible second and dragged myself out of bed, angry about the fact that it was still dark out. I had to practically drag the dog out of her bed, because she was not happy about the early morning either. The dog adjusted much faster than I did. On the positive side, I did actually pack my bag the night before and it took me no time at all to get to the Bar Method DC Chinatown facility.

Once I showed up, I got a tour of the studio and had a chance to stash my bags, stretch and wait for my class to start. I had the opportunity to speak with a couple of the other women (there were only women in my class and most of them seemed to be about my age) before class and one 2 year vet said, “when you feel like quitting (and you will), just breathe.” Right about then I thought I might be in trouble. Class began with some light weight work, push ups and stretches. I felt like maybe I’d make it through. And then…we started tackling on of the most challenging exercise classes I’ve ever taken (and I took boxing classes for the past 1.5 years). Wow. What a workout – my thighs were shaking and at several different points I was quite certain I might cry. Or, you know, collapse. Luckily, neither happened. What was so challenging you ask? Okay, I’ll tell you. Stand on you toes, with your heels lifted up off the ground. Keep you feet about shoulder length apart. Now squat as if you are lowering yourself into a chair. Repeat forever. Do your thighs hurt? Yeah, multiply that times infinity. 🙂

But you know what? I liked it. It was tough and challenged me and I’m quite sure I won’t be able to walk propertly for a few days, but I could literally feel my muscles working. I’m so glad I checked out Bar Method and I’m excited to take more classes – I think I’ll go back tomorrow!
