Marathon Training During a Heat Advisory

July 23, 2017 By: Courtney @ Eat Pray Run DC21 Comments

The weather was the biggest challenge this past week. DC was under a heat advisory much of the week, with high temps and high humidity. It was terrible. I had a couple of really rough runs but then was able to move on, because that’s simply what you have to do to make it through training!

Berlin Marathon Training Recap

Here’s how the week shook out:

Monday: 5 easy miles to start the week. It was hot and humid, but that statement can be applied to all the runs this week. (I said this same exact line last week. I had no idea how bad the weather would get). This was a fun run while I was in New York.

Tuesday: Ugh. This was a terrible run. I had 5×1000 on tap and decided to use my hotel treadmill because there wasn’t a track nearby in New York and I didn’t want to have to worry about making off the distance and dodging other runners. It was horrible. I couldn’t get my groove and hopped off the treadmill after two miles or so. I went upstairs, composed myself and then went back to finish my workout. This was definitely my worst experience so far in training this season. Boo.

Wednesday: REST DAY IS THE BEST DAY!

Thursday: This was my first week of 8 miles at tempo pace – plus a warm up and cool down. I ran with my friend Kate, which was a God send because the weather was AWFUL. So hot. So humid. Just really really nasty. We made it through and then I collapsed in my office at work (I ended the run at my office) and recovered with an acai bowl. I was WIPED out after this run.

post tempo run

Friday: 4.1 easy with Jen and Gaby.

Saturday: 10 miles in the morning with my run group and then the Crystal City Twilighter that evening. Super fun hanging with teammates. 13.3 miles for the day.

Sunday: 5 easy with Caitlin, who is now getting back into running after taking five weeks off for injury! Glad to have my bud back!

Total mileage for the week: 43.1 miles

Total mileage for this training cycle: 251.59 miles

Total mileage for the year: 756.79 miles

I will be at Bird Camp (adult running camp for Oiselle teammates) this upcoming weekend so the training recap will not be up until Monday morning. See you all then!

Totally with you about the weather this week – it was pretty much the same in CT. I think if the humidity was lower, it would be bearable, but the damn humidity is just relentless this summer!

Great job on Tuesday’s run. You really had to dig deep to go back on the treadmill and that’s what training is all about!

Yeah, I feel like anything above a super-easy run is ridiculously hard and wipes you out after. But you got it done! 8 miles at race pace, 10 for the day–awesome job! I also give you tons of credit for doing a double run Saturday in this crazy weather!

Congrats on a great week and the long run and tempo run, plus getting back on the treadmill for the workout! I feel like hotel treadmill workouts are the worst- not only is it a treadmill workout and a mental battle, but you don’t know the quality of the treadmill and typically hotel gyms are stuffy. I’m glad you were able to stick with training while travelling and that shows your devotion to the plan. It’s a tough one but Hansons works!

Yes – I know that the treadmill is terrible for me in part because I use it so infrequently but man oh man that was hard!

Fantastic job especially in the heat and humidity! Way to come back and finish that treadmill workout. Treadmill runs are so much more tougher. Sounds like a fun weekend ahead!

This past week was just brutal. My runs last week were all challenging, and I was so glad to see the week come to an end. Hopefully the weather this week will be much more runner friendly.

This morning was cooler but very humid again. Honestly, the weather is gonna be what it’s gonna be. I’m not expecting better temps for the next month or so…at least the weather won’t be like this on race day!

5×1000’s? I didn’t even know that was a thing! You’re doing a great job…but can we get this hot and humid weather to take a hike? Geez, lol! Enjoy bird camp!

Congrats on another great week of training and rocking the 8 mile tempo! As much as bad runs suck, they make us stronger too. πŸ™‚ Have fun at camp! (Say hi to Becki and others for me!).
