This week was a cut back week for me so I enjoyed the reduction in mileage. However, I couldn’t just have a normal cut back week. I decided to do a two-fer! On Saturday morning I ran a 5k that started at 8am. Then I walked .5 mile up hill and ran a 10k that started at 9am. And it was awesome. TOUGH. But awesome.
The Clarendon Day Double let runners run both a 5k and a 10k in the same morning. I needed about 10 miles so I figured this race would be a fun way to get my mileage in. This race was put on by Pacers and the whole organization of the race was fantastic! The 5k started at 8 and then the 10k started at 9. I was able to get to the race around 7:30, grab my bib and meet up with some MRTT ladies, Oiselle teammates and a BGR buddy! So many friends in this race, it was awesome.
My official time was 1:37:07, which means I had a total average pace of 10:26/mi. The images above from my app are misleading — I think the underpasses messed with the GPS signal, because I had both courses as running long. Which, let me tell you sucked when my app said “6 miles” and I WASN’T AT 6 MILES! Of course 6 miles was really 9 miles because I’d ran the 5k previously so I was all kinds of tired.
I’m not quite sure how I feel about running two races in one day. It was tough and I definitely wanted to just keep running instead of stopping and walking uphill after the 5k. However, it was fun to get my mileage in through a race and it was great to meet up with so many Oiselle teammates and run club buddies! Although there were no PRs for me, I was happy with my times. I definitely need to work on my pacing – I still go out way too fast, which always bites me in the butt. Overall, though it was a great race and I loved racing in my Oiselle singlet 🙂
Have you ever run two races in the same day? If so, did you find it as hard as I did?
Yay for you!! I ended up getting up super early Saturday so I could’ve made it, but just got my 9 in yesterday. Oh well. Looks like a good time – love the singlet!
Well the weekend was full of beautiful weather, so at least you got it in under great circumstances 🙂
You go girl!! I’m doing something kind of similar for a race mid October. They call it a distance dare. There’s a 5 mile race & a 2 mile race. Doing both means you’re doing the distance dare! The 5 miler is at 7:30 and the 2 miler at 8:45. I like how the 5 miler is first so even if I’m tired I can easily convince myself to run 2 more miles lol. Besides I should have a nice 20 min break in between!
YES! I would’ve preferred to run the 10k first by FAR! Running just a few miles on tired legs is a much better proposition. That sounds really fun!
Awesome! Nailed it!
Thanks Amanda – it was a new experience, but kinda fun!
Wow, awesome job!!! I’ve never done 2 races back to back – definitely sounds challenging! But you are a rockstar!
Thanks Elizabeth — it was definitely challenging but I’m glad I did it 🙂
What an interesting idea. I have no idea if I would try that… But sounds like you did a great job!
I think I would actually do it again!!
Wow, awesome job! I don’t know that I’m that brave but hearing how it worked for you would make me willing to give it a try!!
Thanks Kristen — you should totally try it! It was fun (even the parts that weren’t fun :))
It was so great to meet you Saturday! Way to rock it out there!
It was awesome to meet you as well! Just saw your blog post — I knew you’d be right up there in the top for AG 🙂 Congrats!
Look at your Oiselle shirt! Love it! Wish I had one to sport with you! I’d totally sign up for that 5k and 10k. What a fun 10 miles!
It was a very fun way to get in miles! And so many great local ladies ran the race!! Next year, Emma 🙂
That sounds like a great way to train, I will think about that race next year. Glad you enjoyed it and shook up your training a bit!
