B&A Trail Half Marathon Training Recap, Week 5

January 8, 2017 By: Courtney @ Eat Pray Run DC22 Comments

I hope everyone has recovered from break and enjoyed a productive and not too painful return back to work this past week. We had yucky weather here, but I was happy to return to work and see coworkers who had taken vacation. Anyway, on the this week’s training recap. Each week during this training cycle (I’m training for the B&A Trail Half Marathon – a relatively small, rails to trail half in March), I will share how my training went and what the week looked like. I do this because: 1) I love reading about how other folks train and 2) it’s great for me to have a record of what I did each week. Also, honestly, it helps keep me accountable when I know I’ll be writing about it. I also post almost all of my runs on Instagram as well. I’ve started a weekly link up for Training Recaps – let’s support each other as we train this winter! Please do link up!

B&A Trail Half Training Recap

Monday: Since it was my last day off, I did my Tuesday workout on Monday instead. 3×1600 – 8:21/8:26/8:28 – in the pouring rain of course. But it got done!

Tuesday: I had trouble waking up on another rainy, cold morning so only ended up having time for three miles instead of five. The dark and the rain were not awesome. Pure Barre after work.

Wednesday: 2 mile walk home from work.

Thursday: Tempo Thursday! This was not a great run. I explained more on Instagram.

Ugh. Hansons plans are so interesting. The mileage is less for the half plan but my paces are much faster than when I was marathon training. Six struggle miles but I was able to hit my tempo paces (avg 8:33). Didn’t feel great though. Anyone else really struggling to get up and run in the dark? I’m having such a hard time getting out in the dark and so I wait and then by the time I start running, I feel rushed. I really need to fast forward a month or so when the sun starts rising earlier! 🌓🌓🌓

Friday: Easy four over my lunch break – I needed a run when the sun was already up and this was that run.

Saturday: A cold, somewhat snowy run. It started to snow near the end but it was light and pretty so I didn’t mind one bit. Just over ten miles.

Sunday: I had plans to run 5 easy miles – but I waited until later in the day and then my dog got sick and I didn’t want to leave her. So I skipped the run – it’s not something I do often, but life does occasionally happen.

Total mileage for the week: 30 miles

Total mileage for the year: 33.5 miles

Total mileage for this training cycle: 157.05 miles

Have a lovely day and be sure to link up if you are training!

I hope your dog is OK.

Ugh, I am tired of this cold weather. I want it a bit warmer to run outside.

I cannot wait until it gets light out earlier and stays light out later! Nice work on the runs this week. Sometimes you just have to get in what you can get in and that’s ok.

I am struggling with the dark too – I think that’s why I’m liking OTF and spinning so much, but I have a Half in March so I have to run once in a while. I linked up my post – I’ll tag you next week and maybe figure out a training plan by then!

You have such a great base that you can jump into a plan at any time, basically!

I feel you on the whole difficulty getting up in the dark thing… I got up at 4:30 two mornings this week to meet my friends and then found myself exhausted for the day. After two weeks of taking it easy due to a couple of surgeries and a bad head cold, I was thrilled to get out and run!

I hope your little dog is going to be okay!

I loved seeing your run pictures – especially with Erin! Sasha is doing fine – she had thrown up so I was a bit worried, but she seems fine! Thanks for asking 🙂

I figured she’d be fine but with the recent dental cleaning, I wanted to make sure!

I had a similar week….I had to cut two runs short due to time (because I procrastinated the run). I’ve been trying to run at lunch as much as possible! I actually enjoy cold weather running, but getting out there is so hard!

Great job with your training! I’m sorry your dog wasn’t feeling well…I had to take my new kittens to the vet because they’ve been sneezing a lot lately. Hope she’s doing better!

Sorry to hear about the difficult run. The upside is that not every run will be difficult. Hopefully the weather will start cooperating more soon. I always find that my training runs goes better when there’s better weather.

Yes, I remember lots of hard runs from every successful training cycle – the win is that the run gets finished!

I think the HM Hansons training is actually harder than the full marathon training for that reason–the paces are so much faster! I am struggling with just about everything this training cycle–the paces, getting up early to run, motivation, etc. So my motto is “Don’t think. Just run!”

That is an excellent motto. And you are right – sometimes we have to stop thinking about it and just do it before we talk ourselves out of it.

The half plan was my first venture into Hansons and I honestly found it more difficult than marathon training at times! I switched back to the half plan now and coming off of slower paces from marathon training, I can completely relate to how you feel about switching to faster paces. But it looks like you are doing a great job so far and you know the plan works and you will reap the benefits on race day.

Thanks Heather. Sometimes it is harder than marathon training – less mileage but MUCH faster paces makes it tough! Also winter is just so blah. Although I’d rather run in cold than heat, the dark cold mornings are hard!
