Be The Love, DC!

March 14, 2013 By: project30in20123 Comments

betheloveHave you heard of the Random Acts of Kindness movement? The idea is simple, yet profound. Complete random acts of kindness for others (strangers or those already in your world) and by doing so, help to create a kinder, more thoughtful world. It’s an amazing thing and I’m so excited to say that my church, Capital City Church, has decided to embrace this spirit and to Be The Love in DC. We are taking the next two weeks (from March 17 – March 31) to turn service into a daily lifestyle and do acts of service. I love the idea of our church really embracing the greater community and showing love through random acts. It’s easy. Buy the person behind you coffee. Give up your seat on the Metro. Let the single mom with three kids go in front of you in the checkout line. It doesn’t have to be over the top or expensive. I let a gentleman who didn’t speak any English use my cell phone at the airport to call his ride. A simple act. It didn’t cost me a dime and yet, I’m pretty sure it made that gentleman’s evening.

Try it out — spread kindness in your world and see how it affects you and your community. And share! If you go to our Be the Love DC website, we have some cards you can print off and share while you are being the love in your community. Tweet about it using #betheloveDC — be an inspiration to others! I guarantee it will not only make someone else’s day but it will make yours better as well.

I can’t wait to see random acts of kindness take over DC!

I can’t wait to hear about the great stories that will come from this, and I think it’s a great way to put the idea of service into action in an “everyday life” kind of way. One year in middle school, the principal focused on random act of kindness. At the time, it felt awkward (mainly because of who are principal was–a large, older, southern, toupee wearing man named Micheal Jordan), but, as an adult, I’m grateful for the lesson he was trying to instill.
