Berlin Marathon Training Recap, 4th of July Edition

July 9, 2017 By: Courtney @ Eat Pray Run DC29 Comments

Hi friends. Another week down – this past week was interesting because the holiday really broke up the week. I didn’t have a 4 day holiday, but I did work from home Monday and had Tuesday off which was nice (but totally threw off the rest of the week, lol). This week I swapped a race in for a track workout, which was a nice change, but boy was it hot here in DC!

Berlin Marathon Training Recap

Monday: Since I was working from home, I slept in a bit and ran my 4 miles later than usual. I paid for it with the heat, but the extra sleep was worth it!

Tuesday: 4th of the July! I decided to run a 5k in place of my speed work and that worked out well. It was VERY hot and humid, so a tough race but I got it done. My average pace was 8:00, which is where I need to be for speedwork. I spent the rest of the holiday at my parents house, grilling and eating yummy food. It was very nice and very chill. Then I was up half the night with neighborhood fireworks that were being set off ALL NIGHT LONG. Grrrr.

4th race

Wednesday: Glorious rest day!

Thursday: I woke up and had some tummy trouble so ended up not having enough time to run my tempo miles. Instead, I ran to work to get miles in. It was raining and extremely humid but at least I got in some miles.

Friday: I had to do my tempo run and I was not excited about it. It was HARD. I did not take water (big mistake) and the humidity was extremely high. I stopped after every mile to compose myself, which isn’t great but I was really struggling. Not so much with the paces – I hit all my paces. But moreso just with the weather. I was very glad when that run was done.

Saturday: 10 miles with my Saturday group. This was hot but a solid run. It was a loop we run often, so it’s easy to put the legs on autopilot for this one.

Sunday: 6 easy miles in better weather. A nice run to end the week!

Total mileage for the week: 36 miles

Total mileage for this training cycle: 16741 miles

Total mileage for the year: 672.61 miles

Did you run a race on the 4th? How was it?

Great job on your training this week!! I agree with you about the 4th of July – it totally threw off my week! Like you, I worked from home on Monday which was nice! The humidity was super brutal this weekend so I totally feel your pain! I barely made it through my 12 miler on Saturday!

I didn’t run a race on the 4th, but I did a 4.5 mile training run around my town. The weather was awesome on Tuesday (really low humidity), so I enjoyed the run!

Ohhh I’m jealous that you had nice weather on Tuesday! I’m kind of excited for this week to be back to normal πŸ™‚

Great job with your workouts this week! I have a 5k coming up where I need to try to nail an 8 minute average pace. We’ll see how that works out.

Way to stick it out with your tempo run through the heat. The runs that we have to fight through to finish are the ones that feel the best afterwards!

Great pace on that 5K! I think racing is the only way I could make myself do tempo runs — or running with a faster friend? It was so cool in northern Germany — coming home to our humidity was a shocker!

I love running my tempos with faster friends – I try to swing that when I can πŸ™‚

This humidity is just brutal. Overall I love the summer but it really sucks for training. I just keep reminding myself that it’ll pay off in the fall when things start to cool off.

Indeed. And even worse case scenario, the humidity will be MUCH better in Chicago!

Congrats on your 5k! This heat and humidity have been killing me, I feel like I’ve forgotten how to handle this weather! Great job this week!

It really is humbling! But on the flip side, even a tiny improvement in the humidity (say to 75%) feels magical!

There is nothing worse than running in hot weather and humidity and no water. I cannot do 8:00 pace runs but I know that one day I will.

I did run a 4th of July race. It is fun and I got to see so many Oiselle birds.

Great work this week. This is the first summer in about 5 years that we didn’t have neighbors shooting off fireworks until late into the night (thanks to moving, ha!). It was such a relief to be able to go to sleep and not be kept awake. The humidity has been rough and I’ve been struggling with it, too. Just like you, I can hit my paces, but I have a problem hanging there without stopping. I feel like the summer is flying by, though, so it seems like the cooler weather will be here quicker than we realize!

Yes, that’s a great attitude and it’s true. I can’t believe we’re already well into July!! This week is my 8th week of training, which seems insane!

I ran a race on the 4th, and it was kind of a nightmare. I feel bad substituting it for a speed workout because I could have run a better speed workout! But, what’s done is done and I can only look forward now, I guess. The fireworks were crazy here the night before so I couldn’t sleep, but we had rain this weekend which meant people could not set them off on Saturday night, at least!

I’m glad your training is going well so far and you’re getting the runs in even with the heat and humidity!

Ugh, this week was definitely hot! Great job hitting your paces with these conditions. And I’m impressed you did the run commute during the rain.

I love to run races as part of training, but usually it’s part of a long run. Genius idea to use a 5k for speedwork! I want to say I wish I had been here on the 4th to run a race but I was in Belize sooo that wouldn’t be totally accurate πŸ˜‰

Oof! A long run the day after a tempo run would be tough! Great work getting it done in the tough humidity! Oh, summer training! Nice that you had better weather to end the week.

way to get in the miles this week and nail your paces despite the heat and humidity! I raced on the 4th and the weather was brutal and humbling to say the least. I just keep telling myself that the summer struggle will make for some faster times this fall….
good job on getting the long run in the day after a tempo as well!!!!

The weather has been insane this last week and now. What do they say? Training through a hot hot summer makes for a fast fall marathon! That’s what I’m counting on.
