Happy Friday! As you probably know, I’ve been traveling for the past two weeks and today I’m finally heading home – but not until late this evening. As such, this week I’m writing about the five best things about work travel. The truth is, being gone (especially for two weeks) is hard. However, I’m focusing on all the positive aspects of it this morning! Donโt forget to check out Cynthia and Mar and some of the other folks who link up with us โ and please donโt forget to link to your hosts if you are participating!
- Room service. As I write this, I’m awaiting a delicious breakfast that will be brought to my door any minute now. I don’t utilize room service to the extreme because it’s so expensive and I try to be respectful of that but dang it’s convenient! I SO love the luxury of room service.
- Comfy hotel beds. Now, I actually think my bed at home is wonderful. So it takes a great hotel bed to really excite me but when hotels get it right, they get it right! My bed for these two weeks of travel – correction, my beds, plural, have been very cozy which I very much appreciate!
- Fun new places to run. I’ve had excellent runs both in Boston and in Chicago the past two weeks and I love running in other cities. In Boston, I even got to race the B.A.A. 5K – my first race in Boston and a new PR!!
- Meeting new people. Last week, I was at a conference, and this week I was working in my firm’s Chicago office. I’ve gotten to meet so many new people and as a people person, I really enjoyed that so much!
- Points! I’ve racked up some airline points and LOTS of hotel loyalty points while I’ve been traveling the past two weeks. Being able to accrue points that I can later use for personal travel is really fantastic and I very much appreciate it!
What’s your favorite thing about work travel?
I used to travel a lot for one of my jobs and I enjoyed it too. I love running in new cities so that was so fun. My first time to Seattle was for work years ago and on my off time I just explored the city for hours and hours. I was there for work but without colleagues, which sounds boring but I loved it!

Sometimes being there without colleagues can be nice because then you can be free to do things in your off hours!
I have to agree with you… room service is definitely a favorite for work travel!

I indulged this morning and it was so worth it!
Yes to all of these! I used to travel internationally in my previous job, and huge advantage was flying first class. I had no idea first class was so awesome until I experienced it for myself! I also got to travel to places I wouldn’t have picked on my own, like Japan.
First class is awesome. I rarely get to upgrade to first class but when I do it’s so nice!
When I traveled alot for work I would always enjoy staying at the nice hotels bc those beds are so comfy. Sometimes we would even get their breakfast buffet free. Yum!
Yum indeed. Nice hotels are the best and a total bonus of travel!
Work travel can be draining but I agree that it does have some high points! I’ve met some great people and I do try to make an effort to at least see a little bit of wherever I am and not just offices and conference rooms.

Yes – often my sightseeing is running which is like a two for one!
My work trips are only 2-3 days, so not much time to get out of the office/hotel, but I do enjoy the comfy beds and hotel luxuries! We go to Dallas a lot and I don’t get to run outside often (too hot & area is not pedestrian friendly) BUT the hotel has an awesome video treadmill where you can “run” through places like New Zealand. I try to avoid treadmills, but those are pretty cool. ๐
Oh that video treadmill doesn’t sound that bad! ๐
I’m going to be in DC this August for a conference, and I hope to have time to run either before or after the sessions. Last time I was there, I couldn’t run far with my ITBS, so I’m definitely packing running gear.

My husband travels a lot for work. Sometimes I’m jealous but often times I just want to sleep in my own bed. I do think I would enjoy running in different and unique places though.
wow, 2 weeks is a long time to be away! But getting run in a different city is always fun. I love Chicago!

Yes – it has been a bit crazy, to say the least… ๐
I love traveling for work! I like getting to run in a new city, explore new shopping and food, and since I live in Alaska I like doing things I can only do in the lower 48 (like eat at Chipotle and shop at TJ Maxx!). Enjoy the rest of your travel!
I bet being away from home is hard, but YES to room service! ๐ Happy Friday!
I am a teacher, so I do not get to travel for work. Sometimes I get jealous of people that get to do grown up things like that, but then I remember my job has some perks too! I love having 8 weeks off in the summer to recharge.

Yes that summer vacation must be amazing!!
Unfortunately the places I get to go for work are pretty repetitive. But sometimes it’s nice to just get out of the office. And since when I’m out I’m in a warehouse it’s a jeans & tshirt dress code which is nice.
But, like you said, the rental car, flight & hotel points are nice to be able to get.
I had 10 days of work travel recently and slept in the best beds ever. Amazingly comfy. Makes me want to change my home mattress !
So happy for you that you got to run in Boston & Chicago. I am going to NY in June and have already planned my Saturday morning run in central park.
Courtney, when I will the lottery I will definitely pay for someone to provide you with “room service” in your home each day (especially for breakfast), okay? I’m so glad you’re headed home today!! Hope you have a great weekend!

I totally agree about room service–I almost never do it, but we did it in Cabo and it was so worth it and so much fun to spoil ourselves! I also get so excited about comfy beds–especially King size ones!

Room service and comfy beds are nice, but having time to run while on travel for work is the greatest blessing – I love running in new cities!!

The airline and hotel points are definitely a huge perk. My husband is starting a new job next Monday, and this new job will involve some travel. While I’m not looking forward to when he’ll be away, we’ll definitely appreciate those points that he’ll be building up.

Oh, gosh, I almost never order room service! I am too impatient and I’d much rather find Starbucks in the morning. I do enjoy the chance to run in a different city — you never know who you’ll run into! ๐
