It’s Blogger Tip Tuesday and this week I’m talking about using Twitter lists. Do you use Twitter? Do you follow more than 100 people? Than you should probably think about how to manage your Twitter account. What do I mean by “manage your Twitter account?” Read on!
Once I started following hundreds (now over a thousand) of people on Twitter, I began to get overwhelmed. I mean, it was (and is) a LOT to keep up with. Finally, I saw someone reference Twitter lists and I got curious. It turns out, by using TweetDeck (and other services, I’m sure, but I use TweetDeck) you can create lists of the people you follow and then have an easy way to read those people’s tweets. This is so, so simple. Let me show you how it works:
First you’ll need to click the Twitter handle of the person you’d like to add to a list. Then you click on the icon that looks like a little person. That brings up a drop down menu where you can click “add or remove from lists.”
Then you will see a list where you can choose what list to add your follower to (or you can create a new list).
You can do this with all your followers and help to streamline your Twitter timeline. I like to use lists so that I don’t miss tweets from my personal friends but still get a glimpse of my larger timeline. Honestly, with so many people that I follow, lists are the only way to manage my social media time.

Do you use lists to manage your Twitter account?
I learn something from you every Tuesday I love it! Thanks again for great info. In all seriousness, have you thought about doing a blogger seminar? I’m your first sign up

Yeah, it took me WAY too long to figure this out π
Thanks for this!! Now if only I could get myself organized enough to sit down and organize my Twitter feed π Also, agree on the need for a blogger seminar!

LOL, thanks Emily! And now I’m thinking about maybe doing some type of seminar…will keep you posted!
I use Tweetdeck but mainly during chats like #runchat so I can keep up with notifications, the hashtag, and other musings. I don’t keep a list because I’m just not that organized or into Twitter but I know I’m on other people’s lists π

I think it was somewhere around 600 that I had to start using lists for real. I actually just have one list I really use, it’s called “keep up with.” This is what I use as my main timeline in TweetDeck and TweetBot. I try to keep up with this list and read everything in it, as the people here are people I *want* to read everything from. It’s basically like the “email” model, where your timeline is an inbox. The regular timeline is more like the “river” model for me, where I just dip in here and there and don’t try to read everything or keep up with it.

yes, i think that is a very good way of describing it. i like to see my regular timeline but don’t pay close attention to it!
Great tip, thanks for sharing Courtney. My follow list on Twitter is getting a bit out of control. One day I really should sit down and start making lists. Oh to find the time to do so….

Courtney, thanks so much for the info! I JUST started using a list on Twitter for my Oiselle teammates; I love this! Makes it so much easier to keep up with what’s going on when I have a free moment during the day. Great post!

thanks tara — lists can make twitter so much more manageable!
Ooooh you must have read my mind! I always feel lost when I log on to twitter after work and there is a sea of tweets! Hopefully I’ll get to creating my lists soon π Can people see which lists they are on?

yes, people can see which list they are on. in your twitter profile it will say “__ listed” – click on that to see which lists you are on. however, if you are listed on a private list, you won’t be able to see that…
Ohhh, there is never enough time in the day to keep track of all of this! Thanks for the tip, I can’t keep up with my almost 2000 followers, I will definitely try this out!

it really helps to make sure you are seeing tweets of people whom you really want to see!
This is great! I know I suck at twitter so much and I need to get better, my current solution of just ignoring it won’t work forever! I’ll have to check out TweetDeck, I’d never heard of it before.

there are lots of different web based services to use to help manage twitter. i like the desktop version of tweetdeck the most and use tweet bot on my phone. i should probably switch to the phone version of tweetdeck as well!
