Boston Recap

August 15, 2013 By: project30in20124 Comments

If you follow me on Instagram, twitter or facebook then you know that I spent last weekend enjoying Boston. I truly had the best time in Boston.

It was a weekend full of:

Amazing theatre. As I mentioned, my cousin Summer is a director and we were lucky enough to catch her current show, “How We Got On.” It was fantastic. The play is set in suburban Detroit in the 80s and tells the story of three young hip-hop lovers who, despite their suburban surroundings, make hip-hop their own. It was funny, real, relevant and had some great music. I absolutely loved it! We had a chance to meet the playwright on Sunday before leaving town and it was a special treat to pick his brain about the show. If you are in Boston, GO SEE THE SHOW! It closes on Saturday.

Great food. We ate a ton of great food. From pizza to organic sandwiches to the best ice cream I have ever had, it was a weekend of yummy eats. Seriously though – about the ice cream…if you visit the Boston area, you need to go to JP Licks. It was so fantastic, we went twice – and then I looked online to see if their ice cream is available commercially. Sadly, it’s not. Sigh. Guess I’ll just have to go back to Boston!

Fun sites. We did the tourist thing and spent a few hours in Cambridge visiting Harvard and also made our way down to Fenway. In between, we saw the finish line of the Boston Marathon, numerous squares and much of the city. We toured by foot, by car and via the T.

Had to visit!

Lots of quiet time. We took the train up to Boston and back, which meant almost 16 hours over the course of the weekend were spent on the train. I was pleasantly surprised that the notoriously awful wifi service on the Amtrak is actually much better than this past spring. Amtrak had published that they were planning on upgrading the wifi, but I was a bit suspicious. I’m thrilled that it actually works fairly reliably now! It makes getting work done on the train so much easier. I have to say that the almost 8 hours on the train each way were not that bad. I slept some, worked some, read some and spent plenty of time observing the scenery. I had a free Amtrak voucher, which is why I chose the train for this trip, but I would maybe consider it again – if the price was right!

All in all, it was a great trip and I really enjoyed experiencing Boston.

Where was your last getaway?

Looks like a fun trip! Long train ride though but at least the wifi was good to go! That sure probably made time fly 😉
