Checking In on New Year’s Resolutions

January 15, 2015 By: Courtney @ Eat Pray Run DC16 Comments

We are a few weeks into the New Year — how is your New Year’s resolution going? I don’t really do resolutions but strive to be healthy year around. I thought I’d share three ways I’m staying healthy in 2015:

checking in on new year's resolutions!

  • Doing more than just running. This means keeping my cross training up through barre classes and making sure to foam roll regularly. I’ve been pretty good with the barre classes but the foam roller is not my best friend — working on committing to foam rolling after every run. Yes, every run.
  • Remembering that mental health matters, too! My church is in the midst of 21 days of prayer and action and I’m trying to be really intentional about taking time out to pray intentionally. I pray daily but setting aside time to pray is something I could definitely do better at..
  • Keeping snacking under control. I stick to the a general philosophy of buying healthy food and then letting meals out or holidays be a treat. This means that were lots of treats over Christmas! Luckily, I had some great sweet snacks at home to curb my sweet tooth (and stop me from buying junk!). The new Special K brownies are a delicious, flavorful treat that I’ve been LOVING recently. Special K Brownies are perfectly-portioned and at 80 calories each, I can have a couple and not feel any guilt! There are two flavors: Divine Fudge and Heavenly Caramel and they are made with real cocoa, chocolate or caramel chips, and topped with a drizzle of chocolate fudge for 80 decadent calories per bar. I am not a huge caramel lover, but I liked the Heavenly Caramel…however I loved Divine Fudge. I may or may not have had one for breakfast. Ahem, when it’s 80 calories, you can have dessert for breakfast, right? These are easy to grab, throw in your bag and munch on while you are on the go. Trust me, you might want to go ahead and throw 2 in your bag!

The Special K Brownies are available at your local grocery store (or Target / Walmart, etc). Follow Special K on Twitter here!

What’s your favorite sweet snack that doesn’t ruin any resolutions you’ve set?

I discovered Greek yogurt that is Honey Salted Caramel….it is wonderful! I have been snacking on that when I want something sweet. Its a little higher in calories that most of the other Greek yogurts I have but salted caramel? I can’t resist!!

Sounds like you are doing well on your NYE resolutions. I have been snacking on Macro bars and Inca corn!

Hmm, I have really cut out snacking after my candy binge on NYE. Since i’ve completed my marathon now ( my only goal for 2015,,,lol), I may look for some new snacks. I don’t have a favorite yet tho!

Foam rolling after every run is super impressive – it’s sometimes hard to make the time for the little things that keep us running healthy but it’s the little things that are so important 🙂

Lately, my favorite snacks have been Picky Bars and Greek yogurt topped with a little granola. I look forward to both!

I didn’t come up with NY resolutions this year, but if I did, I’m pretty sure one of them would be to snack healthier. Adding the Special K brownies to my list of things to try!

I’ve been doing well with healthy snacks overall. I really love my skoop products and throwing them in smoothies in the afternoons!

No resolutions for me, but I am working hard training for my upcoming races. I did make a deal with myself to quit eating so many sweets and that is coming together nicely!

I’ve been snacking on lots of fruit! can’t get enough of it. Anything low calorie scares me b/c I never know what the sugar content looks like. Sucralose and HFCS are no-nos for me!

I have been good with lots of fruit, but I like a tiny piece of dark chocolate some nights after dinner. Sometimes I want that small piece of chocolate more than wine 🙂

I enjoy grapes or pineapples as a sweet snack. Mental health and wellness is also very important! I like that your church is doing that.

I love Greek yogurt with maple syrup. Or I’ll make a “pancake” with an egg, half a banana, and nut butter with a little maple syrup. Or healthy french toast (whole wheat bread, egg, milk) with maple syrup…

I just basically need a way to get the maple syrup to my mouth LOL

Sounds like you’re dong great with your goals this year! My favourite sweet snack is an apple. I keep a bag in the fridge at work for when my sweet tooth strikes.
