Well, Chicago marathon training is here! I’ve truly enjoyed the last couple months of easy running, racing for fun and generally just being very relaxed about my running. It left me feeling recharged and excited for this marathon training cycle. Each week during this training cycle, I will share how my training went and what the week looked like. I do this because: 1) I love reading about how other folks train and 2) it’s great for me to have a record of what I did each week. Also, honestly, it helps keep me accountable when I know I’ll be writing about it. I also post almost all of my runs on Instagram as well. On to the recap!
This recap is unique because my training didn’t start until Thursday – because that’s how Hansons works in terms of days – you run Thursday – Tuesday with Wednesday being an off day. I would’ve probably run a little earlier in the week but I was actually feeling under the weather so I just rested. It was needed.
Thursday: 3 easy miles
Friday: rest
Saturday: Lawyers Have Heart 10k. Man, was it HOT. The course is mostly on highways and it was just blazing. We had nice weather most of the week but Saturday and Sunday were rough. I ran a little faster than Zooma last weekend (which I still need to recap), but boy did I want to be done with that one.
Sunday: 3 more hot easy (in theory) miles.
Total mileage for the week: 12.62 miles
Total mileage for the year: 553.11 miles
Total mileage for this training cycle: 12.62 miles
And so it begins. I’m excited to train for Chicago even though I had a rough reintroduction to summer running this week. I’m actually going to be in Chicago this week for work so I’ll have time for some fun Chicago runs!
note: I am running the Chicago Marathon in support of the Ronald McDonald House Charities. If you’d like to help support this amazing organization, you can do so here. Thank you!
Who else started marathon training this week?
I actually started training for the Chicago Marathon last week as well. I used Hal Higdons plan last year for Chicago, but this training cycle decided to try Hansons Beginner plan. I was very motivated to try Hansons after seeing your success with your Half Marathon PR. It is definitely going to be a hot and humid summer of running,
Oh good luck! I did love the Hansons Half plan so hoping for the same success with the full program 🙂
I can’t believe marathon training is here!!! And I know how you feel about the summer runs….ugh. Looking forward to following along in your training!!!
Yeah summer running just takes it out of me! But….what can you do?
Can’t wait to see how Hansons plan treats you this cycle. I am a couple weeks in and feeling so motivated! We can do it 🙂

woohoo – I’m feeling motivated as well! and excited!!
Summer running is so hard! I am also training for Chicago. Hopefully running in all this heat and humidity will make us stronger on race day.
Yes the humidity and heat will help us on race day. Summer running takes a bit of time to get used to!
I’m training for Chicago as well. It will be my first marathon! I’m excited to follow along with your training!
Oh fun! I’m super excited for Chicago!
Squee!!! Nothing more exciting than the start of training! Still 3 weeks away from me, but excited for you. Here we go!
I officially start my Chicago Marathon training June 5th. I ran 3 miles Saturday morning and all I could think about is how I’m going to survive the long summer runs.
We’ll get through the long hot summer and thence ready for Chicago!!
I’m excited to see how your training goes. It feels as if the last few months flew right by.
I feel like summer always flies by, so this will be fun!
Glad you had a great week! Am so excited to follow along as you do than Hanson’s plan!
I’m excited to follow your training for Chicago since I’ll be running it too! I’m taking a zero week after Seattle on Saturday, and then I’ll be doing another running and fundraising cycle with Team in Training. I’m a little nervous because I’ll have to do several weeks on my own while I’m traveling abroad to do research and to attend a conference.

I love reading everyone’s “I started marathon training this week,” it’s pretty the hot topic on every blog I read this week. I didn’t start marathon training, but I did start my next training cycle for the Outer Banks Olympic Tri 🙂 Good luck with training, excited to follow along!!

Thanks – I hope we can get some runs in this summer!
Wooo Chicago and double Woo #TeamRMHC!!!!! I started my training plan on May 30th because I have a few built in weeks off for triathlons and a trip to Europe.
I can’t wait for the marathon, and hopefully we’ll have a chance to meet up at the RMHC tent!!
That would be great – I’m so excited!
I hope you’re having a great time in Chicago, Courtney, and way to go!!
Thanks – it’s been a very busy trip but I’ve gotten in a couple of runs!
I started my Chicago training this week as well … although my efforts weren’t so hot. I’m still stuck in a semi running slump and need to shake out of it soon! Well, no, now! 😉
Hey – a bad run is better than no run! Way to get out there!
