Chicago Marathon training week five is in the books! This was the last week with no speed work – eek! Each week during this training cycle, I will share how my training went and what the week looked like. I do this because: 1) I love reading about how other folks train and 2) it’s great for me to have a record of what I did each week. Also, honestly, it helps keep me accountable when I know I’ll be writing about it. I also post almost all of my runs on Instagram as well. On to the recap!
Monday: Fourth of July Platform Pure Barre Class.
Tuesday: 5 miles on the Trail of Death after work. Oh man. This was a TOUGH run. The weather was just awful. I was not exaggerating when I said it felt like running on the surface of the sun.
Wednesday: Glorious glorious rest day!
Thursday: 5 more HOT and HUMID miles with Caitlin. Woof. That was another rough run but got the miles in.
Friday: 4.73 easy miles before heading to the Jersey Shore for the weekend!
Saturday: 6 miles in Cape May. 4 of those miles were with my husband, K. That was so nice since we very rarely run together. The weather at the Shore was delightful. Light breezes and MUCH lower temps and humidity. It was glorious!

Sunday: 3.3 easy Sunday beach miles. Followed by a drive back to DC and a 75 minute Pure Barre intensive class. Wowza! I was absolutely exhausted after that very full day.
Total mileage for the week: 24.11 miles
Total mileage for the year: 635.05 miles
Total mileage for this training cycle: 94.56 miles
How’s your weather been? I’m dreading another hot week here in DC. And moving to six days a week of running – yay/eek! 🙂
note: I am running the Chicago Marathon in support of the Ronald McDonald House Charities. If you’d like to help support this amazing organization, you can do so here. Thank you!
I am doing the Advanced Program and have done speedwork since Week 2. I like the variety but they’re getting longer by the week. Week 6 is 1200s and week 8 are mile repeats. Yikes!
Yeah, the 1200s are rough and mile repeats are NOT my fave! But you’ve got this!
I feel like all I do these days is complain about the heat, ha-ha. I feel you! Another solid week for you, that mileage is creeping up. Keep it up!
Running at the beach was SUCH a relief. This week is a big jump in mileage – an additional ten miles or so, so I’m excited (slash scared!)
You’re gonna kill speed work this week!!

That Saturday run on the beach sounds delightful!

It was SO SO nice! Actually both Saturday and Sunday were really nice runs!
The Trail of Death–haha! I can totally relate though. Glad you had a wonderful weekend away with wonderful runs on the beach. Feeling the ocean breezes while running sounds heavenly! I’d say good luck on your first speed week, but you don’t need it. I know you’ll do great!
Aw thanks! So glad I read this before I went to bed – visions of spadework dancing in my head 🙂
Two of my runs last week were mid-day, and let me tell you, I was dripping sweat when I finished! For some bizarre reason, though, I tolerate heat and humidity much better now that I’m older than I did when I was younger. Of course I don’t tolerate the cold as well, so I guess it all makes sense!
The great thing about starting speed work is that you feel like such a beast when you’re done! 😀

Interesting about your ability to tolerate the heat and humidity. I wonder what the science behind that is?
Per usual, it’s been crazy hot and humid here. Congrats on another solid week!

Thanks – now the fun really starts 🙂
Love the pics from the beach with the hubs! Looks like the heat wave is coming back for Week 6. Ima just going to start telling myself I love those hot. humid runs.
Yeah, pretty much. I basically just try to convince myself to suck it up the best I can…
I don’t know how you guys run in the afternoon/evenings. I think from living in FL I just had to go in the AM or die, ha!
That was rare for me – I’m pretty much ONLY a morning runner. That run was AWFUL. Seriously SO hot!
It is crazy hot here too. A get away somewhere cool to run would be nice.
Oh girl, I wish I was going to the beach tomorrow!
