This is a post I’ve been mulling over for awhile. I’ve read tons of recaps for different fitness blogger conferences — Blend, FitBloggin’, etc. They all look like so much fun and I’d love to attend one of those events soon! But as I read recap after recap, I started to notice that for the most part, these conferences looked very…white. It got me thinking…that most of the bigger blogger campaigns and most of the “big” fitness bloggers are also white.
Before I continue, I feel like I should just stop here and say something. Y’all know me. My world is extremely diverse. I have friends from all backgrounds and I grew up all across the U.S. (remember, three high schools in two states?). My best friends are a whole range of hues. But that doesn’t mean that I don’t sometimes wonder…where are all the fitness bloggers that look like me? Of course there are definitely some out there (including my BRF, Mar, Michelle at Running with Attitude and more!) but if I’m checking out a new blog about fitness or running, there’s a good chance that it’s not written by a woman (or man) of color.
We all know that in general, minorities tend to be less physically active than whites. But I also know that when I go to races and events, I usually see lots of people from all races — why isn’t that reflected in the blogging world? I’m not looking for any easy answers, but I am curious why we see so little diversity among fitness / healthy living bloggers.
Because my world is so diverse, once I noticed that most of the recaps featured pictures of mostly white folks, it was all I could see. I know that the pictures are misleading and there were definitely diverse women at all these recent blogger conferences — but where are their recaps? How come none of them are on my radar? Have I been negligent in seeking out diverse bloggers? So many questions! I know this post is kind of a random mess of thoughts but it was on my mind and I thought I’d share! Would love to hear your thoughts!
Have you noticed that fitness bloggers tend to be pretty homogeneous? Are their bloggers I should be reading?
