Last Saturday afternoon, following my Zog football game (sadly we lost), I meandered over to Stadium Armory to watch a bunch of women ram into each other on wheels. That’s right, I went to a roller derby bout. I had never seen roller derby before so had no idea what to expect. The first surprise was that I ran into so many people I knew. Literally, I had friends from four different groups who were there — not including the large group of Zoggers that wandered over after football ended that day. So already the atmosphere was fun and lively and felt like a party.
In addition to my friends, there was quite a sizable crowd. Old, young and in between. The group was diverse, fun and excited about the bouts. There were t-shirts being sold, snacks, face painting for the kids and music being pumped in over the loud speaker. There were two bouts that afternoon and we stayed for the first one. We watched the DC Demoncats take on the Majority Whips. Of course, when watching roller derby you have to pick a team to cheer for and I decided to go with the Majority Whips. The game was a nail biter, with the score quickly getting into three digit numbers and the lead changing often. I (kind of) was able to pick up the basics of the game and scoring, but really the cheering was the most fun. After two intense periods, the Majority Whips were able to (just barely) eek out a win! I was thrilled for them and can’t wait to attend my next roller derby bout.
