I’m really lucky in that not only do we have a great Saturday farmers market by our house, but I also have a Tuesday market right across the street from my office. In honor of both markets being open for the season, I decided to share five farmers market purchases for this week’s Friday Five. Don’t forget to check out Cynthia and Mar and some of the other folks who link up with us – and please don’t forget to link to your hosts if you are participating!
- Asparagus. Asparagus is in season right now so it been buying it like crazy. I’m tasking my husband with grilling it in bunches so we can use it for a side, in salads, stir fry dishes, etc.
- Strawberries. I haven’t seen strawberries at my Saturday market yet, but I’m hopeful they’ll be there soon – and also hoping to find some at my Tuesday market. Strawberry season is just starting and I don’t want to miss it. I also really like going berry picking – although when I went last summer, I ended up with a weird rash – so this year I’ll wear pants!
- Herbs. I’m not a natural green thumb but I’m going to try basil and maybe rosemary and thyme – depending on what’s available. I have a couple pots on our back (tiny) patio stairs that I will put these in – they get plenty of sunshine and I’m hoping they’ll grow well.
- Fresh bread. Both my markets have great bread choices and it’s so much tastier than what you find in stores. It also typically doesn’t have preservatives so that means I have to eat lots of bread quickly. Oh darn.
- Flowers. Last weekend I bought a beautiful bouquet of fresh flowers to give to my mom for Mother’s Day. I find that bouquets from the markets are typically more interesting than what I can find in store and I also just like telling my mom that the flowers are super super fresh.
Do you regularly visit a farmer’s market? If so, what do you like to purchase while there?
We have a huge farmer’s market here that goes all year long but I only visit it during the summer!
I havne’t been to the farmer’s markets out here yet but am looking forward to it. I love getting fresh berries from there.
I haven’t been to a farmers market here yet, my school used to have a small one every Wednesday that was nice to walk around. I definitely want to find one for the summer so I can get some nice fresh vegetables and produce
I love a good farmer’s market!! The one in my town is on Sundays and I’m usually coaching so I don’t get to it much. But maybe after this current program ends, I’ll make a stop there. I love most fruits and veggies, so I tend to go a little crazy.
I made my first farmer’s market trip two weeks ago and got some gorgeous strawberries from South Carolina and some really good grape tomatoes. I wish the prices weren’t so similar to whole foods though!
That’s so great that you have 2 convenient farmers markets near you! I love asparagus and am excited that its in season. There is one Famers Market in Baltimore that i heard is really good and I want to check out at some point.
I love the Farmer’s Market! Fresh asparagus is my favorite, thanks for hosting!!

Ermigerd I am so excited that we will be so much closer to Farmers Markets this year. SO CLOSE. I will buy all the herbs, I tell you!
I used to be more regular about it before running ate up my early sat mornings!
Unfortunatley I don’t have a great Farmers Market in my city, but there arwe many great ones in NYC. If I’m ever there on the weekend, I try to stop by to get some goodies!
I am moving in 6 weeks to a place with an amazing farmer’s market! Can’t wait. And I miss fresh baked bread since I went wheat free. Thanks for hosting!

Peaches! It’s now May, which means it’s peach season. I have to take advantage of it.
LOVE Farmers Markets! I need to make an effort this summer to get around to more in the DC area. Strawberries and other fruits are my favorites. And so true about the bread! I loved berry picking last summer!!
I LOVE Farmer’s Markets! Our long runs end at the Green City Market which is the awesome, big market in Chicago. Last weekend was the first one here and I missed it. I am already planning to go tomorrow!
I love going to the farmer’s market! We get awesome kale in a huge bag for like $2, and I love grabbing local apples too.
I can’t wait to go to Eastern Market this weekend with my mom! I love getting herbs from there, as well as different fruits and they always have good prices on salad greens and veggies. I’ve never gotten bread from there though, so sounds like I need to hit that up!

I actually go to the H St NE market and then City Center on Tuesdays. I occasionally go to Eastern Market but the thing to remember about that market is it’s not a producer’s only market – meaning people can sell stuff they didn’t grow. Just make sure you know who you’re buying from to make sure it’s actually local (they do have a producer’s only market at EM on Tuesdays !) 🙂
That looks so good! Our market hasn’t started yet, but I love getting fresh bread!
There’s nothing quite like fresh strawberries. Yum yum yum!

I don’t go regularly but when I do, I love to stock up on everything fresh! There’s a really great farmers’ market in Madison Wisconsin, on the capitol square. They have everything there.
I don’t go to Farmer’s Markets usually unless we are visiting a new city. Then suddenly I am like, Ooh, a farmer’s market!!!
We have a farmer’s market year round, and there is only seasonal fruits & veggies. Asparagus has almost gone by here but the strawberries have arrived. I bought nectarines for the first time today ! LOVE spring !
The Farmer’s Market is one of my favorite places to go. I remember being a kid and going with my Mom every Sunday. Some of the best moments of my childhood.
I love buying berries, flowers and veggies too! I also love to get raw honey and nuts when I am there.
Good luck with your herb garden!! 🙂
