Woohoo – this is a gloriously needed three day weekend! I don’t know about you, but I’m excited. There are so many great things about long weekends but this week for our free Friday, I’m going to share five of them. Hope you all have an amazing weekend! Don’t forget to check out Cynthia and Mar and some of the other folks who link up with us – and please don’t forget to link to your hosts if you are participating!
- Sleep! In an average weekend, I wake up relatively early both days (super early on Saturdays for long runs and moderately early on Sundays) so I don’t typically have a sleep in day over the weekend. Having an extra day where I can actually sleep in is great.
- Local activities and fun. I love being in DC over holidays where people skip town – it’s quieter and much easier to get around town and I enjoy that tremendously. This weekend I am hopefully going berry picking (weather permitting) and maybe hitting up the Building Museum.
- The chance to do nothing. Yes, this is in direct contrast to number two but that’s what’s great about long weekends – you can do both! Sometimes just laying around and vegging is so nice. I find that it’s so rare that I have unscheduled time so I try to find some down time on a long weekend.
- The kickoff of summer. This is particular to this particular long weekend, but Memorial Day just ushers in summer. Of course, for me, the kickoff is the first time I hear Fresh Prince’s “Summertime” blaring – to me, that equals summer.
- Catch up time. I like to take a bit of time on long weekends and catch up on whatever I’m behind on. There’s always something…because #life. This weekend, it’ll be returning a few things to Target (and hopefully not leaving with $100 worth of things I don’t need), grocery shopping, and organizing our guest bedroom. And maybe buying a new mattress. Not sure about that last one though – mattress shopping has completely overwhelmed me!
What do you love about long weekends? Any fun plans?
I love the extra day to relax and see friends. I’d like to go strawberry picking too. Hmmm!
I love being able to do nothing! We only have one main event and that’s a race on Sunday that we do as a family (which happens to be during a local Strawberry Festival – we are berry themed too!). I’m super excited to do stuff and do nothing all at the same time. Have a great weekend!

Im also getting excited about the long weekend- it feels like there is enough time to do both everything and nothing! That one extra days makes such a difference. Usually the weekends fly by so quickly. Hope you have a great weekend!
Yay to long weekends because no work! but I do work a half day on Saturday.
Funny thing is, I can’t sleep late anymore! I wake up by 6 no matter how late I go to bed.
I need this extra day so badly. I too need to get caught up on #life! Have a great weekend, Courtney!
Usually we lay low during the summer holiday weekends because of the beach tourists. Or else we head to the beach super early with our hot drinks and walk for an hour or so. Tomorrow I will have a ten mile run with friends and hope to see lots of sunshine! By the way, tip for Target….don’t use a shopping cart, just a hand basket. It’s much harder to spend alot with just the carry basket!
There is lots to do around DC and now that the weather is warming up it will be even better. WE re heading out to Middleburg for night today. Thanks for hosting and have a great weekend

I’m so with you on #1. I plan on sleeping in on Monday and I cannot begin to say how much I am looking forward to it!
Well, I work in retail so I don’t get many long weekends. But when I do get an extra day I also love the chance to relax and sleep in! Like you I don’t find I have much unscheduled time so I always relish the chance to relax and have a nothing day. And catching up on stuff is good too. I always have about ten unread/unanswered emails that I need to get around to, as well as catching up on blogging and commenting 🙂
I have early days Sat and Sun but am going to try to sleep in on Monday! I am so happy to be staying put for Memorial Day, too. The extra day can be fun for traveling but I am happy to stay home and enjoy this time.
Love that people skip town! I’m hoping to get caught up on life and just relax. And our pool opens!!!
I’m looking forward to a long weekend too. I won’t be sleeping in though. I rarely sleep in during the summer because I just want to savor the sunshine because before you know it there will be snow!
Good luck on that Target trip. 🙂
I’m just a natural early riser, so I basically never get to sleep in & the fur kids make sure of it anyway.
Hoping to meet a blogger friend in RL this weekend so that’s exciting!
Kids don’t have school today so my commute to work was pretty quiet, which was good given the rain we’re getting. Normally there are a lot more cars on the road, but if families are starting vacation early, I certainly don’t mind.
That one extra day to rest is the best thing. I tend to pack so much in on weekends, especially ones with holidays tacked on, that I need one day to do little of nothing. I believe this year I may float (and nap) in the pool all day. Unfortunately, mattress shopping is a necessary evil. Thanks for the link-up!
All great things about long weekends! Especially like the catch up time! An extra day always helps since time seems to fly by.
I love being able to sleep in (just a little though). The morning quiet time is my FAVORITE!!!!!
I will be out of town this weekend and I am excited for it-I want to sleep in and relax!
With a Monday off, I can really enjoy my Sunday’s to the end. I start thinking on Sunday night about all I have to do the next week so it kind of takes away from enjoying the whole day.
I love a Monday off because I can catch up on all the life stuff – namely, we’re paint our dining room chairs – i cant normally find time for. Also – I am totally downloading Summertime! What a great throwback song!
Even when they’re busy busy busy long weekends are worth it. One of my favorite races of the year, the Spring Lake 5, is this weekend as well 🙂
We just got a Leesa mattress and really like it! Agree that the buying process can be overwhelming, but from all of our research it seemed like Leesa was a great product and great value. We’ve had it a few weeks now and are sleeping great! 🙂
And now I have a Summa Summa Summa time earworm!
🙂
Happy Summa Fresh Price.
I love doing nothing. Unfortunately I also love holiday weekends and I end up making way too many plans for three days! So we won’t be doing nothing this weekend, but it should still be lots of fun. Happy 3-day weekend!!
I like the idea of long weekends, but inevitably if it’s the result of a holiday that nearly everyone gets off we have a ton of plans like wedding receptions, graduation parties, and BBQs. Oh well. At least the weather should be nice! Have a great weekend! 🙂
I’m looking forward to some slower days AND making homemade ice cream! Sounds like you have a great weekend lined up–nothing better than fresh berries!!
I’m really looking forward to have some unscheduled time! Enjoy your weekend!

I do love when long weekends can contain nothing. Those can be nice. It’s also nice when you’re one of the people who stay when everyone else goes, but I’m one of those travelers this time. It’s not all bad, because I’ll get a trip to Hershey Park in.

I love being in a city when everyone goes away. It has a completely different feel, including lots less traffic ! Have a great weekend.
I can fit in 2 long runs over the causeway to the beach and back..Saturday AND Monday so I increase my mileage for the week too. Of course there is still time for a beach day and time with family <3
Looking forward to sleeping in!
I’ve been thinking about mattress shopping too considering the new house…there are just so many options I don’t know where to begin. Hopefully you find one and got a good deal! I hope you enjoyed the weekend. I was happy to get full nights’ sleep each night, even though I was still waking up at 6 am every day!
Still need a new mattress. Sigh. But it was a good weekend! 🙂
