Happy Friday! This week we are sharing five things about me. Since we’ve done five things about me a couple of times (like this post and this post)- I thought I’d switch it up this time and share five things about my childhood. I was really blessed to have an awesome childhood full of fun, imagination and family. Can’t wait to learn more about all of y’all! Per usual, Iβm linking up with my girls Cynthia and Mar for the #Friday Five. You can read our linkup rules here. Please note that if you donβt play nicely, we will delete your link. Have a great weekend!
- I just wanted to be like my older sister. My awesome sister, Tanya, is nine years older than me and all I wanted was to be just like her. She didn’t always WANT me to be just like her, but hey, we figured out and now I count her as one of my very best friends. I’m so lucky to have her in my life.
- We moved a lot. My dad was in the military and we moved every 2 to 4 years. I attended three high schools in two states…and think that it made me a really well adjusted child.
- I read all the time. I am an avid reader and have been so for a very long time. I used to try to read at the dinner table, when I supposed to be sleeping and everything in between. I’m so glad that my parents encouraged this habit because loving to read is a blessing.
- While we moved a lot, we are close with our family. I grew up visiting extending family and honestly count family as some of my best friends (outside of my sister, my niece and my cousin also were in my bridal party — so much love!).
- I’ve had the same best friends since I was 12. Two of my bridesmaids and I have been friends since then (ahem, for 20 years). I feel so blessed to have had these relationships over the years and to have people who really know and love me among my closest friends. There is nothing better than life long friends!
What’s your favorite memory from childhood? And because I love y’all…check out how fashionable I’ve always been…
Oh, my gosh, Courtney…these pictures are FANTASTIC! I love that you’ve always been a reader; we definitely have that in common. As the “big” sister to a younger brother (7 years, so not quite as far apart as you and Tanya), I know all about the struggles to make sibling relationships bearable during childhood; my favorite childhood memories always involve that little stinker (who’s no longer little!) and I would never have had as much fun without him. π Have a great weekend and thank you for hosting another awesome Friday Five!

I was such a little funny kid! π have a great one! Ps – loving the book!!
I love your pics! So cute. I was always trying to be like my sister who was 2 years older. She had the BEST sense of humor and everyone loved to be around her. She is still the funniest person I know.
HoHo Runs recently posted…Five Things About Me
Cute throwback pics! Wow to have friends over 20 yrs that’s truely something special. I never enjoyed reading when I was younger bc I was had to do it in school. It wasn’t until after college that I became a big reader. And now I have plenty of time to do it while I’m working.
Lacey@fairytalesandfitness recently posted…The Merchandise ( and how I changed it)
Even with reading in school, I’ve always loved it π
Wow you’ve been able to stay best friends after so many years! That’s awesome.
Daisy @ Fit Wanderlust Runner recently posted…Next Race, Heavenly Half Marathon!
Yeah, it’s really awesome (and crazy!) that we’ve been friends so long!
I’ve always been a reader too. Sadly that often means I’m sleep deprived LOL.
I totally stole your idea and shared 5 things about my childhood as well.
MCM Mama recently posted…Five things about my childhood
Yep. Just finished a book – I’m going to be exhausted tomorrow!!
Cute pics! I’m close with family too! I used to be an avid reader. I need to start reading more again.
Sherry recently posted…Friday Five: Five Things About Me
Thanks π
What a cute kid! It sounds like you did have a happy childhood surrounded by a loving family.
Some of my fondest memories from childhood are of playing–kick the can or other group games with neighborhood kids, climbing trees, riding bikes, playing make-believe games. I played way more than my kids do now. And now that I really think of it, most of those memories are of playing outdoors.
Thanks for the little trip down memory lane!
Thanks Molly! Yeah, I remember playing outside ALL the time!!! Just running around a ton!
Haha I used to read constantly too! I mastered reading while walking and eating so I would do it everywhere. I think my parents didn’t know what to do because reading was a good thing, just not at dinner!
Kristen recently posted…I Live Here!
Ah I love retelling childhood stories. I would have to say all of the shenanigans my older brother and I used to do. We were best friends even though we were 6 years apart π
Sara @ Lake Shore Runner recently posted…Friday Five: 5 Things About Me
I learned to read when I was 3 thanks to my sister who is 13 years older than me – and I never stopped. There are pictures of me reading while eating at the table, reading under the Christmas tree (one of the presents was a book and I didn’t even finish opening gifts till reminded to stop reading), etc. Lucky for me my parents both loved reading and our house was filled with books, my reading was always encouraged and supported, and it’s one of the most essential parts of me. Can’t imagine who I’d be and what my life would be like otherwise.
M @ readeatwriterun.com recently posted…Friday Five – Five Things About Me
I totally agree – I would always get new books for Christmas and head upstairs after breakfast to read all day!!
What adorable pictures! I’m an avid reader too! In elementary school, I would hide books inside my school reading book because I always read ahead and finished the school reading book the first week. I still take breaks from social media a couple of times a week to devour a book!
I love this. I was always worried about raising kids in the military for the moving part and having them to readjust to new friends so often, but sounds like you handled the adjustment well! Great post!
Sue @ This Mama Runs for Cupcakes recently posted…#FoodieFriday: Gluten Free, greek yogurt protein pancakes
Yep, we military brats adjust well π
Oh my goodness, I love those photos! Classic! I have a feeling we would have been buddies when we were little. I also loved to read and we also moved a ton – I think I went to 4 elementary schools! And I definitely agree about being well-adjusted…I definitely learned to go with the flow and sadly, I think I’ve lost some of those characteristics as I’ve gotten older and more settled.
Christine @ We Run DIsney recently posted…5 Things about me
Oh, I’ve def lost some of that as well! But being adaptable is something that I think will always stick π
My younger sister and I have almost 9 years between us too! She was like my live baby doll when we were little we are also best friends now!
Deborah @ Confessions of a Mother Runner recently posted…How to Organize Your Workout Clothes
I use to get in trouble for reading in the dark (when I was suppose to be sleeping) π One of my favorite childhood memories was weekly dinners with my cousins. They came over every Saturday – I loved it.
Jennifer recently posted…Friday Five – Things About Me III (HS Edition)
My son was horrified when I told him that I used to go to slumber parties and we’d stay up all night reading.

Aw, I love the old-school pictures! I was a huge admirer of my big sister too, and I’m glad that we’ve grown as close as we are! It’s great to be so close to your family…it really is a gift!
Janelle @ Run With No Regrets recently posted…5 Things You Didn’t Know About Me
Friendships that last are great. I’ve been friends with one for 21 years, and even though we live in separate states, we keep in touch. Social media definitely helps.

Mar @ Mar on the Run recently posted…Friday Five: About Me in 5 Words
haha, thanks friend!
Love the photos!!!
I also grew up moving around a lot, and reading ALL THE TIME. When I was new in school I would literally just read through lunch so I didn’t have to talk to anyone, haha.
my favorite childhood memory is vacationing in the mountains π
Joanna @Crazy Runner Blog recently posted…5 things about me
oooh that sounds fun. i love all the readers! i’m not surprised us bloggers are avid readers – totally makes sense, right?
I love those pictures! I LOVE the outfits, we need to bring them back, haha! I always wanted an older sister growing up, so when my mom was pregnant with my sister and she would ask me if I wanted a brother or a sister, I would inform her I wanted an older sister. Clearly I didn’t understand how these things worked…
Elizabeth recently posted…Friday Five: All About Me!
lol – that’s so cute. i always wanted an older brother. i now have a friend that i love like a brother so he’s playing that role. and i have a brother in law so that works great too π
That’s awesome that you have so many friends and family you’ve been close to since childhood! I have some friends like that and it’s a relationship that’s hard to duplicate. One of them is getting married the Summer so we’ll all get to see each other.
Chaitali recently posted…Friday Five – things I’ve learned from one year of blogging
that is truly the best – when you’re all together!!
Love the throwback pics! I didn’t know your dad was in the military, but that’s really neat. It must have been hard at the time, but it was probably really good for adjusting to change as an adolescent and adult.
My favorite childhood memory was going to the library with my mom and hanging out on the couch drinking hot chocolate π That one still sticks out. My dad would putter about in the background or fix stuff around the house, and I had nothing to do but read all day. (Those were the days.)
Jess recently posted…5 Things You Probably Didn’t Know About Me
those were the days indeed! i loved going to the library and checking out a TON of books and reading ALL.THE.TIME. π
We moved a lot too and I wanted to be just like my younger sister lol π cute photo!!
Jess@Flying Feet in Faith recently posted…Friday Five: 5 Awesome Things About Me and Life Currently
thanks – fun that we have that in common π
I love the pictures Courtney!!! You were so stinkin cute!!!
I used to read a lot as a young kid, but then became too invoked with sports once I got to high school. Part of me wishes I had stayed with it over the years. But I eventually got back to it in my twenties. Now I’m fighting for time to read between all the chaos with the kids. I’ll just be happy for some quiet time at this point. .
Haley @ running with diapers recently posted…Five Things About Me
Great photos! I also read a ton; especially on family road trips. There’s a study that says reading (fiction) often makes a person more empathetic!

Courtney, your pics are sooo cute! I was raised a military “brat”, too! I feel fortunate to have seen so much of the world. Friendships that stand the test of time are the best. Have a blessed weekend!
Mary recently posted…#FridayFive- Five Things About Me
Your photos are so cute. Moving frequently is tough on kids, we didn’t move when I was growing up but I did as an adult. I also looked up to my older sister and she and I are very close. She will be by my side running the Boston marathon with me in April!

Great to read about your childhood. A love of reading is a fantastic thing. It’s awesome that you stayed close with your extended family and your friends while moving all over. Those really are some great friends.

I also love reading!
Thanks for sharing!

Great pictures! I also love to read. I used to/still read till way past my bedtime. My family was in the military too, and I remember walking with my mom to the theater on base to watch Beauty and the Beast when it came out. π
Whitney @ French Fry Runner recently posted…Friday Five: About Me
Awwwww those photos!!! <3
I think it's so wonderful that you've had the same best friends since you were 12. I've lost touch with most of the people I knew back then and it makes me a little sad. It doesn't surprise me at all about you though…you're such a sweetheart and seem like the kind of person who would be a friend for life!

I love that you’ve had your best friends for so long – having that type of history is truly a gift π I wish I had kept in better touch with my childhood friends. Thanks to FB I still keep in contact with some high school friends – but it does take effort!
Adorable pictures π
