Happy Friday! As y’all know it’s marathon week here at Eat Pray Run DC and today is no different! This week’s Friday Five theme is “off to the races” and for this gal, there’s only one race on my mind right now: Shamrock Marathon!
Five Four Reasons I Chose Shamrock Marathon for Marathon #2 (and one reminder):
- It’s in Virginia Beach. Need I say more?? I mean, come on. I love VA Beach – it’s only a few hours from DC (traffic dependent, of course) and it’s FUN! No brainer. π
- Oiselle Team meet up! About 25 of my Oiselle teammates will be running in VA Beach this weekend and I figured this was a great chance to get to meet many gals I only know through the interwebs. Β If you see smiling ladies in Oiselle gear in VA Beach this weekend, say hi!
- In addition to my Oiselle gals, I know a number of other runners who will be in VA Beach. A number of runners from my PR Training Group (including my buddy Anne) and a few other blogging buddies as well.
- I did not want to run the Rock and Roll Full Marathon in DC. While I do want to run a marathon in my hometown, Rock and Roll was not that race for me. The race is VERY focused on the half marathon and I’ve heard some not so great reviews of the full marathon. I decided that I wanted a race that would be as awesome as my first full and for me, Rock and Roll wasn’t that.
- Finally, if you so desire please don’t forget to track meΒ (Courtney Dredden) on race day and send good wishes!
What helps you decide to choose a particular race?Β

Have a wonderful marathon weekend!! #4 is a really good point I never thought about, I’ll have to remember that advice when looking at fulls.

Yes — good luck tomorrow Jenny!
I do not have a long roster of reasons to sign up for a race but it has to be close by, affordable and known to be well organized. Enjoy your marathon – will be rooting for you! You will do GREAT!

Thanks Diatta — I’m getting really excited!
I think you made a good decision choosing Shamrock as your second full. Many people choose this race because it is a pretty flat course. My sister Lacey will be running this race for the second year in a row! I hope the weather is nice for you guys!

There are going to be TONS of race recaps on Monday, LOL π
You are going to kill your first marathon Courtney!!!
The deciding factors for me are location, distance and # of participants. But mostly location is the main factor!

Good luck this weekend!!! I can’t wait to hear all about it! I have heard the same things about RnR DC. I almost ran the half last year with a friend but there were so many problems I’m glad I waited. It would be a great race to run someday! I almost always choose my races because of the medal! π

Good luck! So far, reviews from other bloggers have been a lot of help in choosing which races to run. And choosing MCRRC races because they’re free for members π

thanks michele! i’d love to meet up as well — i think it’s time we plan a local gals blogger meet up π
Good luck this weekend, Courtney! I don’t blame you for choosing Shamrock over Rock ‘n’ Roll. I’ve heard the same things you have about the full, and to be honest, the second half of the marathon course after it cuts off from the half marathon course seems a little blah. Its one of the many reasons that my husband opted to only run the half instead of signing up to run the full.
