I guess if I’m gonna seriously do this thing, I should get some gear, huh? And by “this thing” I mean actually be a consistent year round runner instead of a October – May runner. Since I’m committed to being a year round runner now, I figured that it’s time to do a little research into some fun runner toys. First on my list is a Garmin. Specifically, a Garmin Forerunner 10. It is apparently the holy grail in GPS watches and gives you all kind of fun info such as splits, etc. I’ve been using RunKeeper on my phone forever, but it is super inconvenient and awkward to get my pace from my phone when I’m in the middle of running a race. I’d much rather be able to just store my phone and run.
With the limited research I’ve done, it appears that the Garmin is the watch for runners and so I’ve decided it’s the watch for me. I have a few weddings, birthdays, etc coming up that mean I probably won’t be able to buy it as soon as I’d like, but I will definitely have this on my wrist before my next half marathon in October.
Do you currently run with a watch? Which kind? And…do you love it?
I want one too and have had really annoying things happen with running with my phone. I think I posted the same thing – a watch WILL be on my wrist for my Nike half marathon – but I didn’t end up getting one! I regretted it the whole run. I was wavering between a Nike and Garmin 10, but I think the Garmin is probably more reliable.
Everything I read suggests that Garmin is totally the way to go — which Nike model were you looking at? PS – let’s keep each other accountable for getting our watches 🙂
I was looking at the Nike+ running watch with GPS. I was using Nike+ on my phone and liked some of the features of it. But I’ve read some not so great reviews, and I like the upload stats that the Garmin seems to provide. I’m going to drop strong hints for a mother’s day presents…
Haha, awesome — once you get it you must share your thoughts! 🙂
I have the Garmin Forerunner 405cx–it’s about a year old. I love it. I use my phone as an ipod and don’t have to worry about the GPS killing the battery during a long run. I’ve been really happy with it.
Yes! It is now problematic when I finish a 1/2 marathon and my phone is at 25%. Good to hear Garmin support 🙂
Love my Garmin. I had the 405 for ages and got the new Forerunner 10 for Christmas. I have a Garmin v. Garmin post on my blog where I compare the 2. I like the smaller size and simplicity of the Forerunner. I looked at the Nike, but you need to have a component on your shoe, and I have more than one set of running shoes I use, so I was afraid I’d end up wearing the shoes with out the pod.
That’s awesome — I’m particularly glad to hear about the size. I have a small wrist so a bulky watch wouldn’t work for me!
I’m seriously debating buying a Garmin too! I also use a tracking app on my phone and I agree that it’s kind of inconvenient. I have a birthday coming up in July and am hoping for it.. if not, I guess I’ll buy it myself!
That’d definitely be a happy birthday! I don’t think I’ll be able to wait until my October birthday 🙂
I just got the Garmin Forerunner 210 about a month ago. It’s my first GPS watch — I used to use the RunKeeper app or the treadmill (mostly the treadmill). I really wanted a watch though so I told myself if I committed to running outdoors for a certain period of time I would buy one. Running outside has definitely made me a better, stronger runner and I love my Garmin!
That’s awesome to hear — I can’t wait to get mine 🙂
I have a Garmin (405 I think) and the one thing I really don’t like about it is the size, the looks like a grandfather clock on my wrist! The newer one you posted a picture of though is much smaller, I keep contemplating buying one of those just to have a smaller watch, but it seems like such a waste since I have a perfectly good one!
Yes, I’ve heard that about the older models — part of my interest in the new one is that it’s smaller because I have a pretty narrow wrist. 🙂
