Grandma’s Marathon Training Recap – Weeks 3/4

March 11, 2018 By: Courtney @ Eat Pray Run DC18 Comments

Hello friends! As I shared in an earlier post, I have started working with a running coach. I am training for a June marathon – Grandma’s in Duluth, Minnesota. My goal is to go sub-4 and I’ve been building up mileage and now am officially in marathon training mode. Now that I am back to training, I will share my training recap every other week. I hope you’ll join in and link up! You can always follow my progress daily on Instagram, where I share all my runs.

Training Recap

Week of February 25

Monday – 5 miles easy+ core work.

Tuesday – Two  mile warm up, then seven miles alternating an 8:40 mile and a 9:30 mile. Finished with a mile cool down.

Wednesday – Eight miles easy and then core.

Thursday – Six easy miles plus core work.

Friday – Easy four miles in Miami!!! It was so dang gorgeous there. I had the best time!

beach run

Saturday – Another easy four to start another wonderful vacation day.

Sunday – Two easy miles + core work. My last run in Miami and I was so sad to leave!

Weekly mileage total: 40.21 miles

Week of March 5

Monday – 4 miles easy+ core work.

Tuesday – Two mile warm up, with 5×1 mile repeats (8:22/8:17/8:18/8:17/8:05) with a mile cool down. I noticed some tightness in my right achilles around the heel area. I have experienced this pain before so started trying to stretch and foam roll more.

Wednesday – Core work.

Thursday – Six easy miles plus core work.

Friday – Super hard workout because the wind was insane! 3×2 at 8:34/8:40/8:46. A very tough workout.

Saturday – 10 miles before watching so many friends and teammates kick butt at the Rock n Roll half marathon. I got to see my coach Becki kill it and take second place in 1:17. She is incredible! Such a fun day – after cheering, I hosted around 40 teammates and friends for brunch. And drank ALL the mimosas! 🙂 Unfortunately my ankle continued to get worse so I chatted with Becki and we agreed I’d take a couple of days to rest, foam roll and do eccentric heel drops. Boo.

twins

Sunday – No running – focusing on rehabbing my angry ankle.

Weekly mileage total: 35.92

Total mileage for this training cycle: 317.54 miles

Anyone else deal with ankle / heel pain? This has happened before so I know I need to do better and not just wake up and run without stretching. I’ve also booked a massage at my PT’s office for Saturday after my long run.

Cool on doing Grandma’s, but boo on the cranky ankle! Why don’t my biz trips to Miami look like yours? I would not venture outside where I was.

I loved seeing all the photos from this weekend! It looked like you all had a great time and it’s always fun to cheer on other runners.

Sorry to hear about your ankle I had an ankle/foot issue a few weeks back and it turns out that it was my sneakers. I tried another brand and it just didn’t work for me. Once I switched sneakers it got better. Using KT Tape also helped. I hope that your ankle starts to feel better soon!

Thanks Kim! I’ve had this before and know I need to do better stretching and rolling (and massages) to avoid it. I’m sure I’ll be back to it in a day or so!

Sorry to hear about the ankle still bothering you – but glad you are taking a few days to let it get better. Saturday was SO much fun – I’m just said I missed out on the brunch (and mimosas.) Heal fast!!

Thanks! It’s annoying but a couple days is nothing in the scheme of things! Sad you missed brunch too – it was super fun!

I hope your ankle feels better soon. IMHO, I would go ahead and get a massage, I hate having to wait very long for one. If you can get in before your long run, it might be a better idea (could still go after your long run too). I hate when niggles and crap pops up in training, unfortunately I can’t really do workouts and train right now because I’m so janky (anything marathon pace or faster, not that I can physically run much faster, leaves me in pain for days!).

But in non-running life it looks like you had a fun group brunch! And yay for going to MIAMI!

Yes brunch was amazing! And cheering was so good. My ankle already feels a bit better after doing the heel drops but I know the rest will help as well. So sorry you still can’t do speedy runs. So frustrating! You handle it well, though!

Great job! I just can’t imagine running 7 days in a row these days – my body always rebels! I’m sorry to hear about your ankle…I’ve experienced some discomfort in that area, usually on the treadmill. My calves have been super tight so it’s something I’ve been keeping my eye on.

And your brunch sounds like it was fun! I was a little sad to not run RNR DC this year, I always loved seeing you out there!

Running often actually works really well for me…as long as I do all the “other” stuff. LOL – I’m working on fixing it, though. Brunch was amazing. Such fun!

Ugh! So sorry to hear about your ankle/heel pain. I hope your time off and self-rehab works and you’re back on the running trail very quickly.

    Thanks for the linkup!

I’m not going to lie, I was just a tad jealous when I saw all of Miami pics on IG. I cannot wait to be able to run at the beach. Hopefully I’ll be able to do so in June…fingers crossed!

Miami looks pretty awesome! I’ve never been there. My vacation in a few weeks is quite the opposite – skiing in Canada! 🙂 Bummer on your ankle. I hope the early care resting keeps it in check for the rest of your training cycle!

This is so awesome! I have never run the Grandma’s but we’ve been there for the race as spectators and the energy was insane!!! I think you will have a great time and it is a beautiful city. And June is the perfect weather– not too cold and not too hot. June is definitely my favorite month to live in MN! Cant wait to see how it goes!
