Grandma’s Marathon Training Recap – Weeks 9/10

April 22, 2018 By: Courtney @ Eat Pray Run DC14 Comments

Hello friends! As I shared in an earlier post, I have started working with a running coach. I am training for a June marathon – Grandma’s in Duluth, Minnesota. My goal is to go sub-4 and now I’m about two months out from race day. Time is flying and I’m getting excited! Now that I am back to training, I will share my training recap every other week. I hope you’ll join in and link up! You can always follow my progress daily on Instagram, where I share all my runs.

Training Recap

Week of April 9

Monday – Three very easy miles. I was pretty sore after Cherry Blossom (recap coming!) and needed some easy miles.

Tuesday – Five easy miles.

Wednesday – Core work.

Thursday – Nine miles, with the middle six at 8:35 pace.

Friday – Crystal City 5k – with 1.5 miles before and 1.5 miles afterwards.

Saturday – 18 great miles! My longest run since the Richmond Marathon last fall!! I felt very strong on this run – like I definitely could have kept going. Except for the fact that it got HOT near the end, it was practically perfect!

Sunday – Easy two plus core to end the week.

Weekly mileage total: 43.5 miles

Week of April 16

Monday – Five easy plus core after work.

Tuesday – This was a hard workout for me. Two mile warm up, then two at 8:40, then three at 8:25, then two at 8:45. I was a bit slow almost the whole workout and super frustrated.

“I don’t wish it was easier. I just wish I was better.” – Shalane Flanagan after Boston 2014. Same. Tough morning but on the positive side, I hit MOST of my splits and it’s done. 60 days until @grandmasmarathon 🏃🏾‍♀️🏃🏾‍♀️🏃🏾‍♀️ #runner #rundc #oiselleteamdmv #oisellevolee #blackgirlsrun #runthistown #womensrunning #bgr #womensrunningcommunity #irunthisbody #werundc #eatprayrundc #runtheyear #betterforit #flystyle #spellmantrained #4breaking4

Wednesday – Rest day!

Thursday – Six easy miles.

Friday – 20 miles!! I have not run 20 miles in training in FOREVER. I was super nervous, especially because this run had me running 20 with the middle 12 at ~9:20 pace, but I totally knocked it out of the park, which left me feeling super confident! Great run!

Saturday – Treadmill three – I was in NJ this weekend for my grandmother’s 90th (hence the Friday long run).

Sunday – Three more on the treadmill plus core to end the week.

Weekly mileage total: 47.08 miles

Total mileage for this training cycle: 547.29

I’m headed to a work conference next week – anyone else traveling for work??

You’re running a lot of miles each week this training cycle. Have you run that many in past marathon training cycles? Getting that much time on your legs plus hitting your paces on your speed workouts sounds like a recipe for success!

    Thanks for the linkup!

Thanks Debbie – yes I’ve used Hanson’s before which is pretty high mileage – actually a bit higher than what I’m running now. Hoping for great things in June 🙂

Your long runs seem to be going great – has to be a good sign for Grandma’s, I think! I start work travel next month. I’ll actually be in the DC area (Arlington) in four weeks. I’ve heard the riverfront may be a nice place to run?

Oh fun. There are tons of great places to run in the DC area – and actually a few different bodies of water, so unsure which one you are referencing but yes lots of (paved) trails by the water that are great!

My year has been blissfully business travel free so far! I know that won’t last forever, but I didn’t mind letting my economy plus subscription lapse for a few months. Your training is going so well! Interesting to see how different being coached makes the process!

Oh wow, really? No work travel yet – that’s impressive! I’ll be travel free most of May and then June and July are crazy! And yes – having a coach is different – I really love it!

You really knocked your Long Runs out of the park these last two weeks! Well done! It’s amazing what a good long run does for your confidence!

Very exciting that you’re using a coach for the first time. Have you shared who you’re working with? I’m injured right now (broken leg) but might not go back to my previous coach when I’m finally back to running, just to change things up to see what else is out there.

Excited to follow your training for Grandma’s! Way to crush that 20 miler!

Oh no, Jessie! That stinks – I’m sorry to hear that. I’m working with Becki Spellman, Oiselle elite runner. She’s fantastic!

Congrats on some awesome mileage and nailing the 18s and 20s! Glad things are going well for you, even if the runs aren’t all amazing, you’re not injured and you’re putting in the quality. I hope things go well with your traveling this week and that you’re safe and can find somewhere to run (knowing you, you will, and you will find fun people to run with and fun places to run).

Thanks so much Amy Lauren. I’m a bit unsure about where I’m running tomorrow but I’ll figure it out during my warm up 🙂

Congrats on the 20 miler – it must be weird to do 20 after doing Hanson’s for so long, great work! Training looks like it’s going really well!

Thanks Janelle. It was kind of weird but not TOO weird because I have run 18 many times in Hanson’s training!
