Somehow, my list neglected to include a very important goal: have my first big girl Christmas tree! Christmas is by far my favorite holiday. Yes, I like seeing presents under the tree, but more importantly, I love the spirit of the holiday. I love the decorations, the cheerfulness, the celebrations and the feeling that it is all about something bigger than ourselves. Up until I was
18 21 23, I would awaken around 6am Christmas morning to check out our beautiful tree and the abundance of wrapped presents underneath. I would take stock of the piles of gifts and mentally prepare myself for my job as Santa – each year, I’m tasked with distributing the gifts to our family. I like to organize it so that no one opens their gifts too quickly and then is done. I like to think that my skill in this area is a gift.
When I moved to Alabama after law school and was truly on my own for the first time, I knew I needed a tree. However, the big 5 footers intimidated me and so I got a small, artificial table top tree. It came pre-light and was cute enough. When I moved to DC, I wanted more. I stuck with the table top size, but purchased a real tree. LOVED it. It was super cute, smelled delicious and was the background for my holiday card that year.
I recently moved into my place in NE and realized I actually have the space for a full sized tree. So I did it. I trekked over to Frager’s Hardware and purchased a gorgeous five footer. I rushed her home to create my own version of the perfect holiday movie: I cranked up the Mariah Carey Christmas CD, cracked open a bottle of champage and got to work perfecting my masterpiece. Once I was finished, I was left with an empty bottle of champagne, a fresh smelling home and an amazing feeling of accomplishment. Oh yes, and this:
