I hate the treadmill. I have always hated the treadmill. I find it boring and so much more difficult than just lacing up my shoes, heading outside and running. I’m not sure quite why treadmills are like a slow death to me, but I know I’m not the only one. I have plenty of friends and run buddies who also hate the treadmill. Personally, I find it difficult to run for more than 30 minutes on the treadmill. I have a coworker who does pretty much all her runs on the treadmill and it blows my mind. This hatred of the treadmill has made training for my spring races quite a challenge. The weather, has, in a word, STUNK. It has been cold and windy and rainy and wintry-mixy for what seems like forever. Unbelievably it is March 25th and there is snow falling outside. It’s absolutely absurd and has really been a challenge.
So I’ve decided that it’s high time I have a break through on the treadmill. Time for me to beat this nemesis of mine and beat her good. My goal is to break my 30 minute threshold on the
evil machine treadmill. I know I’m not going to like it and it’s not going to be easy, but my oh-so-sneaky plan is to start watching an hour long tv show while running so I’m so involved I can’t quit. I promise to report back the good, the bad and the ugly later this week.

Last night, I watched an episode of Friday Night Lights (which by the way, is my new obsession. This show is amazing – if you haven’t watched, you should start. Full series is free on Amazon Prime Videos) while…running on the treadmill! I even kept it up for a few minutes after the show ended, for a total of 51 minutes on the treadmill. This is my new treadmill running record and my best treadmill performance by about, oh…let’s say 30 minutes! 🙂 I am so stoked that I’ve figured out the winning treadmill combination for me = wifi + my fav show + determination + sheer stubbornness. I am not going to lie and say it was the most amazing run ever. It wasn’t. But the fact that it even happened is huge for me and I’m very proud. I realllllly wish I would’ve tried this earlier when it was freezing and wintry mixing…you know, like Monday. I still prefer running outside, but it’s nice to have an alternative, especially since before I know it, “spring” will be over and DC will move into
swamp season summer.
