NO WIRE HANGERS EVER!

February 4, 2014 By: Courtney @ Eat Pray Run DC18 Comments

Okay, hope most of you got the reference in the title (if not, go take a quick jaunt here). Of course, I’m not really complaining about wire hangers, but my “wire hanger” of blogging…CAPTCHA. Ugh – I’ve hinted at how much I dislike CAPTCHA before but I wanted to revisit and explain more how awful I find it. What does CAPTCHA even mean? I did a bit of research (or ahem, read Wikipedia) and learned that CAPTCHA stands for “Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart.” Who knew not? Not this girl. So why do I hate CAPTCHA so much?

Because when I want to leave a comment on a blog, I HATE having to decipher things that look like this:

impossible

The numbers are small, hard to read and just annoying! I truly do not understand why bloggers who theoretically would like comments from their readers would make it harder to do so. So here it is…my plea for NO MORE CAPTCHA EVER! Please, stop using it. Your readers hate it and you are loosing comments — trust me. If you are truly concerned about spam, check out this post where I recommend a great plugin for dealing with spam.

Okay, stepping off my soapbox.

What’s your blogger pet peeve?

So glad you wrote this because I have been thinking of putting out a tweet saying “for the love of Bloggers everywhere, please turn off your captcha). It is frustrating and I often refresh the button when I get letters because I can’t tell what they are. I keep refreshing until I get a set of numbers instead!

So this may be a tad trivial, but my blogger pet peeve is when bloggers post a picture for Wordless Wednesday and then add a caption to the photo, thereby defeating the point of Wordless Wednesday. Like I said, absolutely trivial, but it irks me 🙂

Very timely since, the 2 blog related things for my list this week are to figure out how to add the pin it button and how to remove captcha 🙂

I couldn’t agree with you more, there have been so many times where I write a comment and then if I have to go through a minute of trying to figure out letters and numbers and then get them wrong, I just x out of the page!

As a blogger how would you know if your comments is set up like that? I ask because I don’t know if I have CAPTCHA on my comments. I hate when I have to do that and usually by the 2nd try I stop and don’t even leave a comment 🙂 It is too much work!

Lindsey I just checked and you don’t — but an easy way to check on how your blog looks to others is to open a new browser where you aren’t logged in (for example, i regularly use chrome, so every now and again, i’ll open up firefox for this) and go to your blog’s site. make sure it’s as user friendly as you intended 🙂

I think since you are on wordpress you don’t have it – I think it’s blogger blogs unless they disable the setting.

I totally agree. I HATE when I can’t figure out the words and it just keeps giving me a new “password” every time!

I try to stick it out with Captcha if I really want to comment but sometimes it takes so long to try and get something I can read easily. And often I think I’ve commented and come back to that tab later only to find the captcha screen still up. I guess I just move too fast – comment, press enter and move on to the next broswer tab since I have multiple blogs open at once. 😛 I don’t get the wire hanger reference, will watch the youtube vid.

I think you’re the only person I know who campaigns against captcha as much as I do. We should join forces — together we can save the world from captcha one blog at a time! 😉
