I have looked at my calendar and determined that I will begin training for the Chicago Marathon in June. However, in between now and marathon training, I still want to make sure I don’t get out of running shape. I’m not going to be following any sort of plan because I really want to run easy between now and then, however I do need a bit of structure. I’ve talked about my goals for the month and how they include running five times a week. I thought I’d share a bit more about what I have on the calendar between now and marathon training.
I’m not actually sure that I’ve mentioned this on the blog yet, but this upcoming weekend I’ll be running the B.A.A. 5K. I’m super excited and can’t wait for my first race in Boston (and yes, I’m staying in town to spectate the marathon). Once I’m back in DC, I’ll have another 5K before the end of the month. In May, I don’t have any races on the calendar but I am going to running camp! Remember how much fun I had at Bird Camp last summer? Well this year, I’m going back – Oiselle has introduced regional Bird Camps across the country and in May, I’m heading down to North Carolina for all the running with all the women. SO SO SO excited!
By the time camp is over, it’ll be the middle of May and I’ll be planning out my marathon training. I know I’m using the Hansons Training Method, but I like to have a spreadsheet listing out each week’s workout (like I did for my half marathon). I mean, what’s marathon training if I can’t freak myself out by looking two months ahead at my plan, right?
Oh and to keep things fun, I’ll run the Zooma Annapolis Half Marathon on June 4 – right as I’m beginning training. (PS – use code COURTNEY16 to save 10% on registration)
I am just excited. I’m excited for training, excited for raising money for the Ronald McDonald House (click here to read more about why I chose to raise money for them) and excited to absolutely kick butt at my 7th marathon this October.
Are you currently in training?
Awesome!!! Having that half marathon on the schedule will keep you training with a consistent base! I’m doing the same, except building that base. I’ll be posting about my plan later this week. Excited to start your training, and interested to see how you like Hanson’s for the full marathon. I’ve heard it’s exhausting, but pays great dividends!!
Oh, interested to read about your plan! I’ve actually heard that the half marathon plan is harder than the full Hansons plan although I’m not sure how that could be possible!!
I think that is smart. I’ve found doing a race or two, keeps me motivated and focused. I like to do them even with no immediate goal races. Your plan makes sense and sounds smart.
Thanks Hollie – I know that June will be here before I even know it!!
Great plan! I always keep races on the calendar for motivation and because they are fun! I’m toying around with trying Hanson’s marathon method this time around so I’m interested to hear more of your thoughts!
I think you’d probably enjoy the plan – look for my review later this week!
That’s neat that you get to go to the running camp again and that they have it in NC (NC is a nice place for running it seems, lots of races there and lots of varied terrain for running… trails, beach, cities, got it all). Plus the half will help keep you on track too.
Sounds like you really liked the Hansons Half plan if you’re thinking you’ll use their full plan too :).

I really did – I’m so grateful for how the plan worked out for me so I’m excited to give the full plan a go!
I’m really excited about seeing your marathon training journey. Your plan sounds really good and I didn’t even know they have running camps! How awesome is that?!?!?
This is where we are going (it’s a special weekend for the Oiselle team but you can sign up for one of their many other camps!): http://zapfitness.com/zap-fitness-adult-running-camps/
One of these days I’ll do the Zooma half! Your plan sounds smart, and I try to keep a pretty consistent schedule when I’m not training so I don’t lose a significant amount of fitness. When I’m not training I don’t worry as much about speed work, but try to run 4-5 days a week and have one longer run on Saturdays. Have fun in Boston!!!

Zooma is fun – it’s hilly and will probably be hot! I’m super excited about Boston!
How exciting about Boston and Oiselle Bird Camp!!! Looking forward to reading all about it 🙂

Thanks Allie – I’m SO excited for both events!!
It’s hard to believe that Chicago training is just around the corner. Whoa! I love adding races into my plan to use as training runs. It make things so much more fun. I am running one half a month in preparation. Nearly all of them will be training runs, but right now I am trying to focus on getting strong before summer.

Great plan! I’m excited for you!
HI Courtney,
Came across some of your tweets, so I thought I’d drop by and check out your blog.
As a personal trainer myself, I’m curious if you have ever tried weight training along with your running ? If so, how did it work out for you?
I look forward to any feedback you my have. Thanks in advance.
Eric
Oh, running camp sounds like so much fun! I’ve got one more race in April and then nothing except Lawyers Have Heart 10K in June …. I plan to focus on some cross-training at OTF if/when they ever open in Alexandria.
Camp is the best! You’d love it. OTF is a great workout!
Sounds like you’ve got a smart plan. Nobody ever like starting their training 100% back over. I can’t believe that ZOOMA is only 8 weeks away! Time is just flying by!

I know – it’ll be here before we know it!!
I love training for a big goal race, but the week(s) after are fun. I like to rediscover my love of running and find new places to run or just run by feel. I have a few halves coming up, but they’re just for fun so I’m in the in-between stage. I’m going to savor it! I may try Hanson’s in the fall, but only for a half. Btw, have fun at Bird Camp! I’m going to the Midwest one in August (in Michigan). 🙂

Fun – you’ll love camp. It’s the best!!
I’m not training for one specific event until my race in December – so maybe adding a few smaller races to my calendar will help keep me motivated?! I hadn’t considered it until now, but it might be the kick in the butt I need to work on my speed and maintain fitness throughout my upcoming busy season at work.
Not training, yet. As you know I just finished my first marathon. I am going to work on my speed for a couple months before starting training for my second marathon.
