Scenario: you are reading your favorite blog and as you scroll to the end of the post, you excitedly type out your comment to the blogger who wrote such a funny/useful/touching post. You submit your comment and go on about your day. A few days pass and you realize that you have no idea if the blogger even saw your comment because you hadn’t made your way back to that blog. You head back to the blog only to see that the blogger has indeed commented – in fact they replied to your comment pretty quickly. You wish that there was a way for the bloggers response to your comment to hit your inbox instead of you having to remember to go back to that blog to check and see if the blogger replied to your comment. End scenario. As it turns out, there is a very easy way for self hosted bloggers to do exactly that.
The answer is very simple – a easy to install plugin called Comment Reply Notification. There may be other plugins that do the same thing, but this is the plugin I use and I’ve had no problems with it. All it does is send an email with your (the blogger) response to the person who commented on your blog. The comment still shows up on your blog but your readers don’t have to go back to your blog and search to see if you’ve responded to their question or comment. It’s genius and I get frustrated when bloggers don’t use it. Think about it – you like it when people comment because that’s building the sense of community on your blog, right? Well, then don’t you want to make sure that when you respond to that comment, it’s actually seen? And those of you who say “oh, well I’ll just make them come back to my blog because then I’ll get more pageviews” are missing the point. Do you really expect someone to come back to your blog, search for the post they commented on on the off chance that you’ve replied? If you do, then I’m sorry to tell you, but you are off the mark. Make things easy for your readers.
Oh. And while we’re at it. I’ve noticed an increase in bloggers who use some form of Comment Reply Notification except that when the email arrives it says some version of “xx blogger has replied to your comment on xx blog. They are hungry for pageviews so click here to see the response.” Okay, I made that second sentence up – it doesn’t say that, exactly. But honestly, that’s how it reads to me and I don’t understand it. I will say that I never click through from that link just on principle. I know, I’m stubborn. 🙂
Do you use Comment Reply Notification?
