As I mentioned, I’ve just started training for both the Cherry Blossom 10 Miler and the Nike Women’s 1/2 Marathon. My plan was to use Jeff Galloway’s run / walk method for training and to get back into running (it’s been a couple months since I’ve run consistently). I hesitate to write this because I’ve only tried the run / walk method twice…but I HATE IT. The actual running part is okay and it hasn’t been that difficult to get back into the habit of running after work. I how, however, struggled with how much longer it takes me to complete my runs. I’m used to being able to allocate about 30-35 minutes for a 3 mile run. Not so much with this run / walk thing. This is truly a lesson in patience and the other night I failed. About half way through my run, when my app told me “new interval. 1 minute slow.” I ignored it and kept running. I finished my run strong and at that moment I realized just how much I did not like stopping to walk.
So, when I did my 4 mile run this weekend, I just ran. It wasn’t great, but it felt better than running than walking over and over again. I am not sure if I’m done completely with the run /walk method or if this is just growing pains. But I have a hunch that I may just prefer to run. Period.
