I officially began training for the Shamrock Half Marathon this past week, so welcome to my new half marathon training recap series. Each week, I’ll share how my training went and what the week looked like. I’m doing this because: 1) I love reading about how other folks train and 2) it’s great for me to have a record of what I did each week. Also, honestly, it helps keep me accountable when I know I’ll be writing about it. I also post almost all of my runs on Instagram as well. I wrote about my training plan here, if you want to check that out.
Monday: 4 easy miles with my friend Rachael. My easy pace runs are supposed to be between 10:30-11ish, and our average pace for this run was 11:10, so the week was off to a great start.
Tuesday: 5 easy solo miles in a long sleeve and shorts. DC weather this past week was absolutely nuts. Average pace was 10:18.
Wednesday: rest day, Pure Barre class
Thursday: My first tempo run in awhile. 1 mile warm up (at 10 minute pace), 3 tempo miles (averaging 9:30 pace) and 1.3 cool down miles averaging 10 minute pace for a total of 5.3 with an average pace of 9:45. Ran in a t-shirt and shorts and my hat was DRIPPING with sweat when I finished. Gross.
Friday: Christmas! I got in 4 easy miles at a 10:30 pace.
Saturday: 8 easy miles for the longest run of the week. This week my group ran what I affectionately call the “trail of death” (aka Custis trail out in VA). This thing is hilly and not the most fun. But we got it done and at a really solid 10:30 average pace as well.
Sunday: My schedule called for 4 easy miles and that’s what I did. I didn’t want to get out there, but I got it done. 4 miles at a 10:25 pace.
Total mileage for the week: 30.6 miles
Total mileage for this training cycle: 30.6 miles
I am still pretty terrified of my plan and of consistently running six days a week. I sped up my tempo and strength paces for next week after consulting my plan again. Tempo pace should be race pace, and I was running a bit slower. So, faster we go!
Did you run this past week or did you take a holiday break?
