Welcome to week twelve of my Shamrock Half Marathon Training Recap. Each week, I’ll share how my training went and what the week looked like. I’m doing this because: 1) I love reading about how other folks train and 2) it’s great for me to have a record of what I did each week. Also, honestly, it helps keep me accountable when I know I’ll be writing about it. I also post almost all of my runs on Instagram as well. I wrote about my thoughts on my training plan after a couple months here, if you want to check that out.
This week was just as challenging as last week – I had some good runs and a couple that felt really tough. I also went to Pure Barre three times, which was great, but exhausting! Here’s the recap of the week:
Monday: Four easy morning miles. Plus Pure Barre after work.
Tuesday: 4×1 mile repeats. I took these to the track and Caitlin joined me for her run. It was sufficiently challenging but felt great to hit all my splits. Mile splits: 8:36/8:45/8:46/8:40 – plus warm up and cool down. Pure Barre after work again so I could take a total rest day on Wednesday.
Wednesday: Rest day!!!
Thursday: Tempo Thursday – one mile warm up, four tempo miles and one mile cool down. My legs felt tired but all miles were at or faster than race pace. Holla!
Friday: Just over four and a half morning miles.
Saturday: Just under eight miles before cheering at Rock N Roll DC for about three hours. Best day, so fun!
Sunday: Rest day
This is it, folks. Race week is here. The Hansons plan doesn’t have you really taper that much, so I’m modifying the schedule a bit. My plan is to run Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and then Saturday (the 8k) and Sunday (the half marathon).
Total mileage for the week: 28.89 miles
Total mileage for the year: 344.51 miles
Total mileage for this training cycle: 390.51 miles
It’s RACE WEEK and I am EXCITED!
Do you love spectating races as much as I do?
WAHOOO!!!!! Congrats on a successful training cycle. I can’t wait to see what you do on race day!!
Thanks so much, Jess! I’m excited as well!
Yea taper time! 😉 The best part of training! I love spectating races – so fun!
Agreed! Spectating was SO MUCH FUN!!
You’re going to have such an awesome race! I can’t wait to hear all about it!
Aw, thanks friend! Hope you had fun spectating yesterday!
Good luck and I can’t wait to see how you do. You’ve definitely been working for it!
Thanks Hollie – hope to see you there!
Good luck on your race – you will rock it!!
Thanks Michelle!
Awesome job hitting your paces and getting in all that cross training. I’m SO excited for you for your race. When I worked with a Hanson’s coach, she told me just wait for what happens late in the race. She said that while everyone else was slowing and tiring, I’d be going strong and probably speeding up. She said that feeling of passing everyone at the end was priceless. She was right! And that’s going to be you too! You’re going to do awesome!
Ah, Jennifer you just made my night! Thanks SO much for the encouragement – those words just pumped me up. I AM READY!!!
Spectating is fun! I was so jealous yesterday that I wasn ‘t running it!

Spectating is the best!
Happy taper week!
My son ran the Rock ‘N’ Roll Half, and asked if I was going to come down and cheer him on. I should have hired you to hold up a sign saying, “Go, DanMan, Go!” 🙂

Haha, I would’ve happily done so. 🙂 I’m sure I saw him go by – we were out there for almost 3 hours!
OMG I love that pic of Sasha! I can’t believe we’re both at the taper–I can’t wait to follow your race, I’ll definitely be thinking of you while I’m running my half! I’m also running today, Tuesday and Thursday, then it’s off to Dallas on Friday!

We need to exchange numbers so we can text each other after our races!! 🙂
Boy, I’m super stoked for you! Wish I was coming to spectate. I can picture you running strong along the last stretch on the boardwalk. You got this.
Thanks, friend! I’m envisioning that as well 🙂
Good luck with your race and looks like you had a great week of training! I agree with you on the Hansons plan, the last week is still a little heavy and do not blame you to adjust that so you feel fresh- especially since you do cross train with barre and live a fairly active lifestyle in other ways. Better to take an extra day off if you feel like you need it. It was really neat you went to RNR DC to spectate and cheer and still got a lot of miles in :).
So I have to confess that the race runs literally half a block from my house so it’s really easy to cheer! But it was so fun. Thanks for the words of encouragement 🙂
Good luck on your race this weekend!!! You had a great training week.
Thanks so much Tia – I’m excited!
Yay race week! It sounds like you’ve had a really strong training cycle and you’re ready to rock this race 🙂

Thank you! It was great to see you out there!
Oh man, I can’t wait to hear how your race goes because you’ve been working SO hard! I didn’t realize you ran 8 miles on Saturday, well done, and thanks for being out there to support us!
Yes, I had to get my miles in before I cheered! I was so happy to see you out there! Way to go!
Good luck at the race! I KNOW you will crush your goal because you’ve been so consistent with your plan. Have fun!!
Thank you – I’m very much looking forward to it!
Yay for taper time! You’ve put in the hard work and I have no doubt that it’ll pay off this weekend at Shamrock. I had no idea that you ran 8 miles before standing out on the course. You are a rock star!

Aw, thanks Kathryn. Yes, I got up early to get my run in so I could be spectator ready! I probably ran an extra two miles during the race when I jumped in with friends – that was so fun! I love spectating!
You had a great training week and so sweet to cheer on the marathoners!! Sounds like a fun day and love running with friends! No where near the mileage you are, but hope to one day 🙂
It’s here already? I’m losing track of time and it’s only March. Good luck!!
