I’ve desperately wanted to do some track work lately in order to shake up my running and (mostly) to help increase my speed. A fellow member of a great running group (note: this is a mom’s group…obviously I’m only a mom to my pup, but the group is more about women running together, so they’re cool with that!) I’m a part of found that a group of female triathletes do a track workout every Thursday morning in Arlington. It’s free, and open to all, so we all trekked out to VA to get our butts kicked. I was particularly excited to get to meet Sue who blogs over at This Mama Runs for Cupcakes. She’s pretty awesome and I’m so glad I got to join such a fun, encouraging group of ladies! We started with a one mile warm up, then moved into striders and then an interval series. We ran 4 sets of jog/sprint intervals and it absolutely kicked my butt. I didn’t use my GPS to time our total distance but according to Sue and a couple of other ladies we ran almost 5 miles total.
This was a a great workout and it demonstrated to me just how much I need to do regular speed work. Even though I hated waking up at 5am, I’m planning on going again this Thursday. And the Thursday after that. And probably the Thursday after that. I definitely need the extra push to get me through a full speed workout and loved having the other ladies there and loved pushing myself! If you are in the area, you should join us – here is the link to the group we joined and you can find all their workouts that are open to the public there.
Do you do speedwork? If so, do you do it with a group or solo?
Testing. My first comment didn’t post.
Congratulations! I do my speed work on the treadmill, which I loathe, but it’s so hot in FL and I don’t have easy access to a track that it’s hard for me to get it done outside!
Props to you for doing speed work on the track. That’s a great way to make track workouts fly by!
Track work is an excellent way to get faster! Nice job 🙂
Yes, it is definitely THE way to get faster! Also THE way to make sure I fall asleep at 10pm every night thereafter 😉
The track is a great place to do speed workout:) I actually hit up my local track this morning (not for speed) but to have a softer flat surface to put my first day back running (post injury.)
When I can do speed workout, I go with my dad’s old school methods, pick a big hill 8% grade or more at least 100 meters long and run up it as fast as I can, and jog back down, repeat, repeat, repeat pretty much until I believe I can’t go another step, and then force one more repeat:) because that is the one that counts the most:) it’s miserable, but it works! Oddly I actually like the pain.. Well after the fact haha…
That sounds like an awesomely tough workout 🙂 Congrats again on your first day back!
So awesome that you have a group to run with! I love running with other people; they truly can motivate you like nothing else. Nobody wants to look like a wiener in front of other people 😉 WAY to go with that speed work!
Thanks girl – it kicked my butt. But I’m going back for more this week 🙂
I’m not looking forward to doing track workouts! I love MRTT and Sue so glad you got to workout with them!
I know, I’m thinking I’ll have a love:hate relationship with the track 🙂 MRTT is awesome, though!
Very nice!! I need to find a track!
It really is a great way to do your speed work!
We look pretty happy for 6:30 am!
yeah we do! see you tomorrow morning 🙂
