Wedding Wednesday: Honeymoon Plans

May 7, 2014 By: Courtney @ Eat Pray Run DC31 Comments

It’s Wedding Wednesday and as usual, I’m linking up with Jordon, Meredith and for the first time Mary. One of the first questions people ask after you get engaged is “where are you going on your honeymoon?” To be honest, K and I knew pretty early on that we’d not be taking an immediate trip. We wanted time to save up for a honeymoon (after spending a lot of $$ on the wedding) and I’m also in the process of searching for a new job and wasn’t sure where’d I be in the job search process, which made it difficult to plan a vacation. So instead of planning a full fledged honeymoon right after the wedding, we’re doing things a bit differently!

The Honeymoon

K and I will be spending two nights at this beautiful Kimpton hotel in Old Town Alexandria right after the wedding (Sunday and Monday nights). Due to my frequent work travel (and loyalty to Kimpton — I LOVE them!), I had two free nights so we’ll be using them to relax after the wedding weekend. Then we will take a longer honeymoon later this fall.

So where are we going to go when we do take our honeymoon? Well, we haven’t solidified that yet, but I require a few things:

  • A beach
  • A cocktail
  • A glorious bed
  • A cozy chair on said beach so I can read / nap / drink said cocktail in peace

As you see, I’m not too picky. We will probably do an all-inclusive or a cruise. I’d love to hear where you went for your honeymoon or any tips you have. We’ll also most likely be using a AAA planner because of the great deals they can get.

Weigh in — where’d you go for your honeymoon?

We did something similar to you in that right after our wedding we had limited $ and vacation days. So we went to Vegas for a few days where my grandfather-in-law gave us some nights at his time share and a generous family friend gave us airline tickets. We decided we’d save the big trip for our one year anniversary and we went to India, which was amazing.

We spent two weeks in Hawaii. Taking advantage of any deals you can get your hands on is definitely the way to go. My parents gave us first class plane tickets as our wedding present (they redeemed lots of frequent flyer points on our behalf), which gave us more flexibility to splurge a bit more on the hotels and rental cars (convertible on Oahu, Jeep Wrangler on Maui!). Your requirements for a honeymoon were very similar to ours, with the exception that my husband wanted to be able to do activities as well, which is why we opted for Hawaii instead of the Caribbean.

Yes. When we started discussing our honeymoon ideas my parents offered us the miles as a very early wedding gift. Their reasoning was that although they were giving it to us almost a year in advance, we weren’t actually going to be able to enjoy it until after the wedding.

Okay so I haven’t had my wedding/honeymoon yet (it’s in June 2015), but we plan to take a “mini-moon” to Philly right after our wedding, and as my fiancé puts it a “mega-moon” to Tuscany to do a cycling tour (via REI vacation) the following May.

I love your weekend getaway idea! Weddings are just so pricey and I think it makes a lot of sense to have the honeymoon later. I have very much the same requirements as you do for a great vacation! 🙂

We had a destination wedding, so our honeymoon meant that we just stayed little more than a week later after we got married. It was awesome and I sure wasn’t in any kind of hurry to leave! (We got married in Turks & Caicos and it was amazing.)

We didn’t go on our honeymoon until two years after we got married. We were just too busy! We went to Paris for a two week getaway. It was worth the wait!

I’m so happy we waited! You are going to have the beat time! We booked our hotel in the Exumas through Jetsetter. It was a hotel normally out of our price range but they offered a great deal and were extremely happy with the quality. The person who suggested the Turks above is right-grace bay is the most beautiful beach I’ve ever been on. If you want more activity I suggest Aruba. The Exumas were great if you want something remote and private.

Ah, love Jetsetter — I think their resorts are more reliable that the ones on Groupon — thanks for the suggestions! 🙂

We booked a place called Excellence Playa Mujeres in Mexico through AAA and we’re SO excited. We are going right after the wedding, so I will let you know what we think. It’s an all inclusive just north of Cancun (so easy to fly into), and it looks AWESOME. We have this amazing two story room – an 800 sq.ft. suite that then has a private rooftop terrace with its own soaking pool and a giant outdoor lounging bed. They also have a nice looking spa 🙂

Well hello! Welcome to my link-up! Thanks so much for joining! I see you’re a DC blogger – I LOVE DC! I lived there for four years and it’s where I met my now husband!!! I think a mini-moon in Alexandria is a lovely idea! I love Alexandria! Sounds like a great way to relax for a couple of days after the Big Day! We went to Costa Rica and had fun exploring. It was fantastic! I must say, though, a beach with a cocktail also sounds incredible!! 🙂

We honeymooned in St Lucia and stayed at Sandals Halcyon Beach (the smallest of the 3 sandals resorts there) We both loved it. Tropical, beaches, good food options, all inclusive, and adults only. I did a lot of price comparisons and using different travel sites and read read read reviews taking the good with the bad. For us the flights from NC to St Lucia were almost 1/2 the total trip cost.
