Hi there! Well, this week’s post title pretty much says it all. I basically did no running this week – I wrote last Sunday how I was wiped after returning from San Francisco. Well, I wasn’t just wiped. I ended up being very sick all week, which is pretty unusual for me. I missed two days of work and pretty much felt miserable most of the week. There was no way I had the energy to walk down the street for a few days – running was definitely not happening. This week’s recap will be short and sweet, since I only ran one day. But I do look forward to hearing how your week was – hopefully it was MUCH better than mine. As you may remember, I will still be running (and even doing a couple of races) in between now and when I start training for the Berlin Marathon. But I’ll primarily be focused on cross training and keeping my base level of running up. I imagine I’ll run a few days a week for the next month or so before training gets going. In that spirit, I will continue to enjoy all of your training recaps, so please do keep linking up! This is a low-key link up, but if you participate regularly, link back to this blog. Now on to the maintenance training recap!
Like I mentioned, I was sick. I had a fever, body aches, a sore throat and generally felt like death. I took two days off work and the time between Sunday evening and Wednesday morning all blurred together. I think I slept on average about 18 hours of the day – maybe more. It was as if my body had decided that it needed ALL my energy to expel the virus from my body. Ugh.
I finally began feeling a bit better by the end of the week, which was great because on Saturday I was scheduled to run the North Face Endurance Challenge Marathon Relay. This was my third year in a row running the marathon relay and it’s such fun. The weather is always nuts but I love this race anyway. It’s a trail race and so super muddy and dirty and just plain fun. I knew that it would be hard after not running all week and being so sick, but I was glad I felt up to it. So how’d it go? Well – it was great. I mean, Saturday was ridiculously hot (in the 90s!) and I was exhausted. But I didn’t wipe out in the mud, my legs felt wonderful and although I was in rough shape after I finished my leg (my body was so confused), it was a great day and fun to spend time with my teammates. Added bonus – I got to see two friends finish their first 50k! So so so inspiring and so amazing.
All in all, I’m calling it a total win. I’m happy to be back from the plague and looking forward to regular workouts this week.
Total mileage for the week: a whopping 6 miles
Total mileage for the year: 447.42 miles
When was the last time you were really sick?

I’m glad you are feeling better. Last time I was really sick? I had norovirus earlier this year and it kicked my butt! I rarely get sick but this is the year for that. My immune system is so messed up.
I hope you have a better week!
Thanks Wendy! Those bugs can be so nasty!!
Glad you are feeling better:) I just did my first 50k 4 weeks ago. And my first marathon last week. Haven’t gotten sick yet. But have been sleeping alot. And have ITBS issues. So haven’t run either this week. Gonna start slow next week.
You are a rock star! Congrats, so amazing!
Glad to hear you are feeling better. Great job on that relay even with the weather! The last time I was sick was around Christmas. I was feeling OK one day and then the next day I had a cold.
OMG! You are my hero for running that race when you had been so sick for most of the week. Well done and hopefully you are already starting to feel a lot better.
Thanks – I think I sweated out most of it. I still have a cough but it’s not bad!
Glad you felt good enough to go to that race. It was HOT this weekend!
So so so hot. Ridiculously hot. I’m so proud of the folks and friends who ran long distances Saturday.
Glad you were feeling well enough to run your leg of the race, and hate that you were so sick! But it’s cool you pulled it off and saw your friends complete the 50K- and I bet that meant a lot to them that you were there.
I have been that sick before and agree, it takes a lot out of you. My last serious illness happened the MORNING OF a 5K race I was hoping to PR. I had to miss it and people were like, you could have come and just jogged or walked. Actually… I was on the couch all day and the lights were on because I was too weak to get up to turn them out. Let’s just say that virus was not a good “diet plan” either- I looked frail and sick for awhile.
Oh nooo! But yeah, when it’s that bad there is no real physical activity. My appetite has come back, thankfully! I like eating 🙂
I’m so glad that you are feeling better – that sounded awful!
Congrats on racing this weekend!
Thanks – I’m happy to have turned a corner!
Oh I didn’t realize you’ve been sick – I’m glad you’re feeling better and was still able to do your marathon relay, which sounds like it was a lot of fun!

Yes, it was not fun at all!
I’m sorry you were sick! That sounds miserable, but it sounds like you got some rest and that you still had fun on Saturday.
I’m so sorry you were down for the count a lot of this week! Glad you’re feeling better! I was really sick for the first few weeks of my Ironman training last year (I’m sure continuing to train prolonged it). Hope you got it out of your system before your next training cycle kicks off!
At least you were able to end the week on a high note. Being sick is the worst! It’s been a long time since I was that sick.

oh goodness. I am glad you are finally feeling better!!!! Glad you were still able to run your leg of the relay too!!!
last time I was that sick was 5 days before Myrtle Beach half marathon. I stayed sick an additional 10 days after that race because I tried to run despite still being sick(I had the worst race of my life there btw)—-the rest of my family including all 4 kids came down with the flu within that 3 week period. so I am pretty sure I had the flu. ugh!
anyways, glad you are starting to feel human again. I hope you have a good week ahead!
I remember reading an article once about elite runners who fly home immediately after a race. The majority of them get sick, likely as the result of all-out racing combined with travel germs. There was one coach who forbid his athletes from flying on the same day as races. Maybe this was a result of delayed all-out racing and travel for you. Whatever it is, glad it worked itself out of your system now while you’re in between training cycles.
I feel like I either read that article or someone mentioned it to me, because it sounds familiar. I’m glad the worst is over!
Just love all of your pictures in DC. Almost every time I see one of your post, I think maybe I should run MCM again. Hope you are on the mend Courtney!
Haha, you should! I’ll be there cheering 🙂
Thanks for picking me up lady! It was a Sunday of cries and fries for this girl… haha I couldn’t resist. Thanks for the encouragement 😉 I think I would like to have a revenge run next year!
