What to do over the Holiday Break

December 22, 2012 By: project30in2012comment

Day 22 of 31 Days of Project 30!

If you are lucky enough to have some time off over the holidays, you may be wondering what you will do with all that time off (i.e., you need to get out of the house before your family drives you nuts). While I’ll be off at the Happiest Place on Earth (yep, Disney!), you should check out some of the following options:

  • ZooLights! This free lights show at the Zoo is on my list of things to do before I leave town. Family friendly (but also a great date night!) entertainment and did I mention it’s free? ZooLights runs from 5-9pm through Dec. 23rd, then Dec. 26-30 and Jan. 1. If you have a little one and will be driving, they do have parking, but it will cost you. $9 if you are a Zoo member, $16 if you are not. Go on a Saturday evening and you can take advantage of the shuttle from the Woodley Park Metro Station.

  • I’ve already told you about how much fun ice skating at the new Canal Park Rink was. How about ice skating with a DJ? Every Thursday night through February, there will be a DJ spinning a variety of music at the National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden Ice Rink. This sounds awesome and I will be hitting it up on a Thursday evening soon!
  • The U.S. Botanic Garden. Chances are, you’ve probably never been and if you are looking for a place to burn an hour or so while viewing an awesome model train and pretty cool flora and fauna, head on over. Free, and open until 8pm on select Tuesdays and Thursdays, your family will love this. We took my niece and nephew a couple of years ago and I think my sister and I enjoyed it more than the kids. You can also combine this with a viewing of the U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree and a walk around the monuments or a visit to any of the Smithsonian museums if you so wish.

  • Classic holiday movies! The AFI Silver Theatre in Silver Spring is showing classic Christmas and New Year’s movies through January 2nd. Who doesn’t love a good showing of “A Christmas Story” during the holidays? Check out showtimes here.
