Day 18 of 31 Days of Project 30!
Eds. note: Today we have a guest post from our good friend Alex, who is writing about her favorite new fitness craze – spinning at Sculpt DC. Thanks Alex, and enjoy!
Hello all! My name is Alex, and I am a crazy person. I take everything in my world by storm- giving 100% effort and enthusiasm to every undertaking, friendship, and sports endeavor. I realize that my over the top energies and commitment to things is sometimes hard to understand for many, but I suspect there may be a few readers out there who have similar, if not the same, attitudes towards life.
Today, we’re taking my craziness to the gym. Not just any gym- a boutique spin/yoga studio that opened up in Penn Quarter this past September: Sculpt DC. Now, a crazy person like me can tell you that it was originally going to be called the Art of SpYn, was set to open last winter, then spring, then pushed to this fall, that they had an issue with their name and had to change it to Sculpt DC (a better name, in my humble opinion), and that they were nothing short of amazingly responsive when certain stalkers early accepters were sending them emails to find out when they were going to open, when their opening deals were going on sale, and even sending a congratulatory email for being their first client, ever. Their customer service had me hook, line and sinker before their doors even opened.
And then their doors did open- and I flew on in, taking spin classes (I’m not a yoga person- I need more dancing and fast-paced energy in my workouts) from several different instructors before quickly finding my favorites. What I had been hoping for in this studio, and exactly what I got, was a DC version of my favorite NYC spin studios (from summers up north, visits to my sisters, etc): SoulCycle. In just 45 minutes you get: intense cardio, burning muscles, weight intervals for your arms, abdominal workouts, and a fun loving dance party- all while still spinning on a stationary bike! It’s a 45 minute party, where you happen to get an awesome workout with even more awesome results!
I’ve taken normal spin classes- an hour on a bike where you stand up, sit down, increase the resistance, decrease the resistance, rinse and repeat. Blah. At Sculpt you get black lights, flashing lights, blaring music, movements that incorporate the rhythm of the music (not everyone is good at that part, and that’s ok), at least 5 minutes of arm exercises, push ups while still spinning (sometimes seated sometimes standing), and much more! The time passes so quickly that I sometimes finish the class wondering where the time went, and how I ended up so sweaty!
Plus, my two favorite instructors Zac and Gregg have the most fun-loving, party going, motivational instruction style that I’ve ever found in DC. During class, I kind of feel like we are best friends (outside of class, I’m still working on it)- they give you individual attention, they compliment you when you’re rockin’ it on the bike, and they’re so cool- why wouldn’t we be best friends?
Once the awesome dance party, err, exercise class is finished- you go out of the spin studio and have a luxurious experience in what you can tell is a well thought out, relaxing space. There is a lounge area, where you can sit and read magazines, use the free internet, and sometimes taste free foods or juices before or after class. There are free lockers with keys, filtered water, and bathrooms with showers- fully equipped with shower products, hair products, hair ties, blowdryers, etc. You don’t have to remember to pack anything other than exercise clothes!
So, yes, you can find me at this spin studio at least three days per week (I’d go more, but the one downside of this amazing place is its’ expensive price tag- maybe they’ll sponsor me, as I am clearly nothing short of in love with them!). I highly recommend at least the opening special of 1 month of unlimited classes to anyone that loves spin, dance parties, or is looking for a new type of workout. And with it just being 45 minutes long, it still leaves you time for a quick shower and Bam! In and out in an hour or less!
It’s a good workout, a fun party, and a beautiful space- what more does one need in a workout?
Eds. note: Check out their current special, $90 for unlimited yoga/spin for a month!
