Today is K’s 30th birthday. In honor of that (and our one year anniversary, which is also today), I thought I’d share the story of how we met and eventually went on that very first date. K and I attend the same awesome church and a couple months after I started attending, I decided to get involved and start serving. It was my very first Sunday serving as a Connect Host (but certainly not my last – now I serve almost every week!) and K was on my team. We didn’t speak much until after church when we were packing up. Somehow football came up and I mentioned that I captioned a social, coed football team. K mentioned he was interested in playing and also had a couple of interested friends. I told him we didn’t have room for three new guys, but that I could give him the league information. I also independently verified his football talents with someone else at church — just in case and you know, because I’m crazy about football 🙂
As it turned out, K’s friends didn’t sign up and he was waitlisted because the league sold out. I felt kind of guilty and decided to offer him a spot on my team. This was in early March of 2012. I was pretty convinced that K was just joining the team because he wanted to hang out with me and so I was a tiny bit reserved around him. Our football season started and much to my relief, K could actually play and was an asset to the them. Also to my relief, he didn’t appear to have joined the team in order to get a date. As my reservations about him melted away, we developed a friendship. I began to enjoy seeing him at church and on the football field. I guess he felt the same way because in early April he asked me out on a date. I said sure…and then heard nothing about the date for a week and a half. I still saw him at football and saw him at church, but he said…nothing about our date! I’m a planner, I’m someone who likes to schedule things in advance and this drove me crazy! I seriously almost considered cancelling our date because he hadn’t made any plans. I am so glad I prayed about it and listened when the Lord told me to control my crazy and chill out 🙂
Full circle…we went out to dinner on K’s birthday (April 18, 2012) and we’ve been together ever since. I am so thankful every day for this fantastic man with such a kind, generous heart and a true desire to serve God. I know just how blessed I am to have found someone who supports me in all my endeavors and who just lets me be me. Happy birthday (and anniversary) to my best friend!

"the Lord told me to control my crazy and chill out" = story of my life. I had a similar moment and almost backed out on D right before the first date. So glad it worked out for the best. Love you two!
It’s funny how these things work if you can just take a teeny step back 🙂 Thanks dear – and you know how much I love the 2 of you guys 🙂
