It is finally feeling like fall here in DC. And with that comes cooler weather and the promise of winter on the horizon. My absolute favorite running weather is around 40 degrees. Cool enough for long sleeves but warm enough for shorts. That is the sweet spot for me! I think that transitional weather running can be tricky, so wanted to share how I go about preparing for winter running.
So the key in my mind for preparing for winter running, is figuring out your preference for those shoulder seasons. Personally, I like to have a couple of default options. Once the calendar hits November, I basically run exclusively in long sleeves. Depending on the temps, I’ll match my long sleeve top with either shorts or tights. What I’ve found that really helps when preparing for winter running is making sure you have all the right accessories. On that note, I recently had the chance to try the new Oiselle Power Stretch mittens, gloves and ear band (you can find all of Oiselle’s accessories here and note while I did receive these items free of charge, this review is the real deal). And, y’all? You NEED these in your life. Trust and believe. I just may or may not have had a bit of a temper tantrum when I realized I forgot to pack them on my business trip. Because they are perfect.
They are warm, stretchy and just cozy. When I put on the mittens and the gloves, my face literally broke out in a smile. The fabric (Polartec Power Stretch Pro) feels luxurious and oh so warm.
The fabric is awesome. AND there are reflective details on both the mittens and gloves which helps when running before work or after work (daylight savings). And you can text (or take a picture in my case) on the run with these babies. Sweet! The Power Stretch ear band is great because the fleece lining keeps ears cozy but so far I haven’t found it to be too warm – which I hate. No one likes headsweat from your ear band!
I’m ready for winter running with all my great gear – if you are looking for gloves, mittens or an earband that will go the distance, I highly recommend all three of these!
What is your go to winter running accessory?
It has finally started to get cold enough here to wear long sleeves in the morning. I like long sleeves and shorts too. There is just something about having cold legs that makes me feel like I run faster. haha!

I have a few pairs of gloves with the mitten hood and that is my favorite winter running thing. I’m running tomorrow and it’s supposed to be 30, so it looks like I may need to pull them out!
It was so chilly in DC this morning!!
You need to do a winter running post with more Oiselle gear. π What do you recommend?
Will do – I have a ton and lots of recommendations π
Gloves, gloves, gloves ! My hands get so cold so fast. And I like running in a jacket. However, I don’t like long running pants which bag around my ankles. Boo.
OMG I’ve got to get you some Oiselle. The pants are awesome!
I just started buying Lux stuff and – oh my goodness – I can never go back. π I may get some lux gloves and the earband for everyday. Thanks for the review! I was wondering if you could text with these. I have a pair of Saucony mittens and Brooks gloves and you have to take your finger out to text. No thanks.
So this is how you do winter running?! I’m moving to North dakota very soon & have been in the South all my life. I guess reflective gloves are on my list!
Yep! Good luck!!!
