Welcome to week six of my Shamrock Half Marathon Training Recap. Each week, I’ll share how my training went and what the week looked like. I’m doing this because: 1) I love reading about how other folks train and 2) it’s great for me to have a record of what I did each week. Also, honestly, it helps keep me accountable when I know I’ll be writing about it. I also post almost all of my runs on Instagram as well. I wrote about my thoughts on my training plan after one month here, if you want to check that out.
Monday: After the blizzard, things were still a bit funky around DC. The snow and its remnants affected my runs all week long. However, I still got in each of my runs, which I’m very excited about. I ran six easy miles downtown with Caitlin and got this fun jump shot down by the reflecting pool. You’ll notice I was wearing my Yak Trax – the snow was still pretty much everywhere on Monday so they were very much appreciated!
Tuesday: Track Day! Except the track was COVERED in snow. Literally. There was no way to run at any kind of speed on the track. So I ran loops through the university streets to get 4×1200 in. I was not stoked about this workout because the loops were hilly and so that made it harder. However…I nailed my paces and felt super proud. I was to run each 1200 in 6:20. My repeats were: 6:14/ 6:14/ 6:07/ 6:07. With a warm up and cool down, I ran 5 miles total.
Wednesday: rest day, Pure Barre class.
Thursday: Tempo Day! Not shockingly, my usual trail for my tempos was a mess. More running in the road, which I wasn’t thrilled about but I did it. Seven miles total, with a 1 mile warm up, a two mile cool down and four tempo miles (9:02/ 9:00/ 9:00/ 8:50) in the middle. Much better than the previous week’s tempo run for sure!
Friday: Five easy miles – it was freezing so that stunk but we got it done. I also did two yoga videos since I couldn’t make it to a Pure Barre class.
Saturday: Back to my usual scheduled Saturday long run. I got in just under 10 miles – I wanted to hit ten but had a time constraint and had to get home to get to an event. 9.56 quick miles through DC. Average pace was 10:08, but I think we would have been even faster had we not had to constantly stop to walk over icy spots.
Sunday: After a very long Saturday, I was very tired and sore Sunday morning, but got in five easy miles with Caitlin.
Total mileage for the week: 38.3 miles
Total mileage for the year: 158.69 miles
Total mileage for this training cycle: 205.11 miles
This week begins the second phase of my training, where my speed workouts become “strength” workouts – basically this means that instead of shorter repeats, I have longer (and a touch slower) repeats on Tuesdays. I’m absolutely terrified, hahaha. Wish me luck!
Does anyone else look ahead at their plan and think “no way I can do this??”
