Five Songs I Love to Sing While Running

September 22, 2016 By: Courtney @ Eat Pray Run DC40 Comments

Happy Friday! As crazy as it seems, this is the 4th Friday of the month, which means it’s a free Friday for our Friday Five linkup. This week I’m sharing five songs I love to sing while running. I haven’t run with music for a couple of years. While I love music, I stopped running with it because I was training with a large group and our coaches wouldn’t allow us to run with music on our group runs. There were too many of us and there was concern we wouldn’t be able to hear others on the trail. So that summer I got used to running without music, even though music is my jam and I love it so. While getting used to running without music, I developed a habit when running alone—and I may have started to occasionally sing while running. There may or may not be occasions when I sing aloud when I’m running—I’m not telling. But what I will share are five great songs to sing to yourself as you run! Make sure you check out my co-hosts for the linkup – Mar and Cynthia. Have a great weekend and enjoy the first weekend of fall!

  • Lose Yourself by Eminem. This one is great because it’ll get you all pumped up and trying to think of all those words (rapping is hard, y’all). It takes up a lot of mental space so you aren’t focusing on the fact that it’s 6 a.m., 85 degrees and 100 percent humidity.
  • Since You’ve Been Gone by Kelly Clarkson. The chorus of this is just so fun and so great and nothing says, “I love running!” like screaming, “Since you’ve been gooooooone…” at the top of your lungs while running down the trail.
  • Baby Got Back by Sir Mix-A-Lot. Okay, so this one I added because I know every single word so it often pops into my head while running. Again, the distraction factor is huge.
  • Ice Ice Baby by Vanilla Ice. What can I say, catchy songs are the best songs to sing to yourself while running. Also, during summer runs, this makes my brain think that it’s cooler than it is actually, weather-wise.
  • Before He Cheats by Carrie Underwood. I know, kind of random, but I love the song. It’s one of my karaoke go-to’s, so I know all the words and it’s just plain fun.

I would also unofficially add any random song that someone mentions, songs get stuck in my head so quickly that it’s just crazy. If you don’t run with music but love listening to music, I highly recommend adding any of these to your list of songs to sing to yourself (or others) while running!

What songs do you sing while running?

I love listening to Hey Ya by Outkast on a run. There might be a couple pictures floating around from races where I’m gently clapping along to it, haha!

I can’t say that I’ve ever sung out loud while I’m running, but I LOVE Baby Got Back. I’m pretty sure if I started singing it, I would be able to resist the butt wiggling and that would make running awfully hard. ;o)

LOL – I do sometimes do a tiny dance because you just can’t help it, right? 🙂

Kudos to you for running without music. If I run solo I feel I need the music for motivation. I don’t usually sing along but I will admit to partially dancing sometimes while I run. Yea, Passer byers probably think i’m weird!

Independent by … I don’t remember (but where the spell out the words) is another great one. Also In Da Club.
Right now, I love “Sit Still, Look Pretty” by Daya (or whatever her name is, it is too early in the morning for me to even attempt or be bother to look it up haha).
But really? It is whatever song I last heard, usually!

I only sing out loud to the music playing through my earbuds! I had Lose Yourself on my playlist for the longest time but I finally had to delete it–I think I just got tired of it. Before He Cheats is another great song to sing along to–talk about power!

Because I’m not actually listening to the songs, I can tolerate them a lot longer because it’s all in my head, lol. That sounds crazy but it’s true!

I’ve got Baby Got Back on one of my playlists, and Ice, Ice Baby gets me psyched for an ice bath. I try to channel Stronger on hills!

Ha! I have Lose Yourself on my playlist…..but I”m quite content to listen to Eminem’s vocals instead of my own 😉 I usually have music along with me unless I’m running with a friend. My absolute favorite song, though, is “It’s a Long Way to the Top if You Wanna Rock and Roll” by AC/DC

I stopped listening to music while running and switched to podcasts and audiobooks. I find that music is too variable for me pacing wise. Weird I know. I love singing along to music in races, etc. where I never wear headphones. Katy Perry and Beyonce have some great singable tunes among many others. I’m not a fan of Kanye but I like Stronger for running, too. Oh and Golddigger for some reason!!

I was doing that last weekend to Les Mis. When I know Broadway songs, and I’m running to a Broadway show, it’s hard not to sing along, even when running. Thankfully no one else was in the fitness room.

I usually only listen to music while running on the treadmill now. I think I would get kicked out of the gym if I started to sing along! My first summer running I listened to a lot of Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, The Benjamin Gate and Anberlin while running – good beats for how fast/slow I was running.

My running partner and I often sing together while running. And we’re getting a reputation in the local trail running community as the Singing Girls! But it’s fun and passes the time. And no song is off limits!

I may occasionally be known to sing out loud while running – especially on really early runs as a way to help wake myself up! Current favorite is “This is for the Girls”

I’m a music listener when I run alone – but I’ll start to sing out loud because for some reason, making noise while you are running seems to help when you just want to stop and lay down.

Singing to your fellow running group friends also helps, which I have been known to do from time to time. 🙂

I love it! I totally listen to Lose Yourself during intense speed sessions and Since You’ve Been Gone. I used to listen to Eminem’s Shake Your Ass because it made me so angry – it was just so derogatory towards women! For slower runs I’ve been loving the Lumineers latest album.

I love all of these! I would also add : “Badlands” by Bruce Springsteen, “Young Lust” by Aerosmith, “What You Wish For” by Guster, “Juicy” by Notorious B.I.G., and “Shots” by Imagine Dragons. Yeah, I’m all over the place!

I dug my key into the side of his pretty little souped up four wheel drive, carved my name into his leather seats…
I took a Louisville slugger to both head lights, I slashed a hole in all four tires –
Maybe next time he’ll think before he cheats…

    Love it!!!
