This whole training cycle I’ve about people who FREAK OUT when it’s time for them to taper their running before their big race. Runners apparently fear the taper and hate it when it’s actually here. I think these runners are crazy. There , I said it. I am totally loving this taper. I have one more long-ish run this weekend (10 miles) and then next weekend is the race. My runs have been fun and I’ve felt light and fast. I don’t know…am I doing something wrong? Why does everyone hate taper so much? I just don’t get it!
I’d loveย to hear your taper experiences — did you love it / hate it / not do it? Please shed some light on this for me!
I have a love/hate relationship with the taper. I enjoy resting a bit, but I feel like it messes with my head. During the taper for my last marathon a few weeks ago I was constantly worrying about every little pain & my runs didn’t feel that great. I was so worried that I would never be able to run at planned pace on race day. It all worked out, and the race went great though. Sounds like your taper is going great, and I would say continue to enjoy it! Nothing wrong with enjoying your taper and feeling great before your race!
I think the pain thing would definitely freak me out. I’m just trying to stay positive and happy and count down the days! ๐
I have never had to taper (yet) so I don’t know how I would react.

For a lot of people {me}, I enjoy just being active every day and the need for 3 rest days is weird so I get excess energy. It’s also when people start having phantom pains because they have too much time to think!

Hmmm…but don’t you just do other things? For example, I’ve been doing a lot of walks, pilates, etc…My taper also just decreased mileage, not the amount of days I’m running. But I get what you mean. Especially about having too much time to think! ๐
I hated the tapering because I had way too much time on my hands to stress about the marathon..was I ready? What gear was I missing? Did I need this? Did I need that? AHHHH!!!
Now, that I understand. Luckily I’m not there yet…I hope I don’t get there ๐
Girl take it all in… hard work deserves some relaxation and enjoyment! ๐ xxxx

Thanks Cori!! I plan to ๐
Obvi I never ran a marathon before but in tapering for a half I’ve never really had an issue either. I don’t mind the downtime and I either do other things or take walks. I PR’d in a half I trained diligently for and rested 4 days before due to a little hip pain!

I haven’t have the full taper experience yet but did take some days off this week as well as a few weeks ago because of knee issues and tendonitis and found that tough. Sitting around sucks but I think if you are still active during the taper it can’t be too bad right? ๐
